Just to echo what one of our resident Englishman has said, Dubai is a very modern city that would rival any major metropolitan area in the world. And yes I have been there. I have also been to the port city of Jebel Ali which is also in the United Arab Emirates. I believe there are 7 Emirates if my memory serves me correct. They have everyting that you could imagine you would need: world class golf polo (for you Iain) shopping malls major hotels beautiful beaches year-round sun You name it, you got it. I saw no problem whatso ever with living there. I would do it no problem. Now getting my wife and kids to move may be a problem. It might be slightly different during Ramadan but other than that, the people were great and the country as well. |

[ QUOTE ] I dunno, perhaps I'm the odd man out here, but considering the dangerous state of US/Middle East relations, you couldn't pay me enough to voluntarily move there just to fly airplanes. I'd certainly feel like a deer in the woods of Wisconsin "in season". Hell, I can fly a Cessna in Arizona and get the fix. [/ QUOTE ] I'm Hispanic and you couldn't pay me enough to voluntarily move to some areas here in the USA. |

Its not the size of the airplane that matters!! haha I wouldnt mind it but why would you want to leave the USA where in 5-7 years you could be getting PIC jet time that counts for about the same. it may not be as cool as flying an A300 but unless your only gonna be in the game for a short while i dont see the point. I would rather pay my dues and get seniority with a major carrier. If you that into the Transcon routes why not fly corporate?

[ QUOTE ] What is there opinion bout da gays? Would I experience that quick muslim trial that I have heard about? [/ QUOTE ] That's a question I could not answer. While I did not experience any trouble whatsoever, it seemed as if there were two different worlds that coexisted but didn't venture too far either way. Does that make sense? You had the people from the U.A.E. and then the visitors and it jsut seemed to work. They have their ways there and if you croosed them then one could get into trouble. Example; we were told not to photograph the Arab women (beautiful as they were), especially in there native garb (veils) sorry if I missed the correct term. Well one drunk ignorant sailor (not all of us were like that) decided to do so and promptly had his camera taken and destroyed by her male acquaintance. While I can't answer your question directly, I would like to think that you would be fine. I get the feeling it was like, "you do your thing and we'll do our's)" and as long as we can peacefully co-exist, Great! (and the shopping was outstanding, especially the gold souks !) |

Are you guys talking about my signature line ??? Those aren't my quotes. I found them by one guy that posts on flightinfo, and I thought it was hilarious. Those are NOT mine! In fact, let me put the 'Posted by ...' line back in. |

UAE itself has been stable. Dubai has grown incredibly during the last few years, and the trend continues. CNN.com reported that Dubai will build the world's tallest building to be completed by 2008. http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/03/31/e....ap/index.html Dubai is flourishing. I can't speak for other UAE cities like Sharjah, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, but nothing seems to show instability in UAE. Now instability in the middle east region, that's a whole different story. We had the Gulf War, and now the Iraq conflict, but UAE and Bahrain seem do be doing great. From a current EK pilot, Emirates has about 1200 pilots, 25 of those Americans, and some more on the way. 90% of pilots are expats. and 10 % are local. Most expats. are Aus, Brit, Canadians. |

[/ QUOTE ] I was in the UAE in 93, it was stable then and has been stable since that time. There's no reason to think it will be any different. Who's to say that the U.S. will be stable or any other country for that matter. |

I would rank Dubai right up there with Sydney and Perth as the favorite stops on the trip. |

[ QUOTE ] What about Iran? [/ QUOTE ] My mum used to be a Flight Attendant for Iran Air - that was before the revolution. She said it was wonderful, she worked on the 747SP when they were new, she flew from London, to New York, to Tehran and back to London. |
