Default Non Rev Adventures and the \"DC Three\"

So Kristie and I were trying to get back to AZ after seeing her father in Virginia this weekend. We arrive at IAD and there are cancellations going on left and right.

Fan-friggen-tastic.

Each flight that cancels throws more revenue passengers into seats that we could occupy in order to fly to ATL or CVG and connect.

The more our flights are delayed, the more flights are cancelled and people getting routed taking up more seats.

Trying to stay one step ahead of the ballgame, I was monitoring both PHX and TUS flights and they were rapidly filling up from misconnects and weather delays.

We had already missed the last IAD-PHX nonstop America West flight that evening and the last United flight had already left so we were pretty much out of options for that evening. Monday, being the day after Easter, was absolutely out of the question for getting ANYWHERE so it was starting to look very dismal for escaping the DC area.

I broke out the iPaq and starting looking at options on America West and they had 12 seats out of DCA at 0700 which only three non-revs were listed. We decided to 'pull the ejection handle' on IAD, went to the ticket counter, purchased a couple of "ID-90's" on America West and got flight listed on the 0700 DCA-PHX flight on America West for this morning.

We were able to finagle two crew discounted bus passes to the Metro station, rode the Metro to the Crystal City station across from the airport and luckily were able to get a massively discounted hotel rate at the Hilton Crystal City.

We made it out of DCA this morning without much of a hassle at all, even after being security 'designees' and having our bags dug thru.

Home Sweet Home! At least, uhh, until I fly back to ATL tomorrow to start a four day trip.

Good seeing ya Saturday, TonyW!

Moral of the story? If you're going to play the non-rev game, be fast on your feet and flexible.

Doug,
I was in DC a few weeks ago (as a UA nrsa) and there is a bus that runs from L'Enfant Plaza to Dulles for a price of about $3. It takes about 45 minutes, but it worked out well. I cant think of the number off of my head.

Southwest DC. Right by the waterfront.

Not quite the place where we were talking about setting up our, uh, side business, but not too far away.

Sorry I was a bit distracted on Saturday, guys. But flychicaga said it best -- I was about to have a heart attack!

Good job getting out of DC today and I hope all is well with the situation you came out for!

[/ QUOTE ]that would probably be the Washington Flyer bus that we took from IAD to the west falls church metro station...we were able to get employee rates of $3 for the 20+ minute ride...

had to admit, the bus ride was comfortable and the metro easy to get around! same as most other metros really!

overall, with the metro, it took about 50 minutes or so to get down to the Hilton Crystal City...

It's amazing how many airports ive slept in when i was a kid thanks to being bumped off of flights or not getting on.

Then again... non-rev privaledges...especially jumpseat privaledges are freaking awesome. Can't wait until CASS gets implemented fully.

You've got to travel smart with them..that's the key. Nothing free is ever easy.

To those of you complaining about the privaledges- you'd rather be dropping 400 bucks for each ticket? Come on, now....

I got to hang out with Doug and Kristie. The Illinois/Arizona game was on.

I called flychicaga and his exact words were "dude, I'm about to have a heart attack."

If you're just a fan of college basketball, you can't ask for more.

If you've got a rooting interest, well, I sure hope you had some valium on hand. I sure could have used some!

Actually, maybe some lithium, because the mood swings I was having...

....LOL boo to you Chicaga!

AZ Wildcats are my hometown team one of the few things I enjoy about Tucson AZ.
That was an awesome game. The cats had a huge lead in the beginning but somehow got beat back.
All together it was a really, really good game. For the no.1# team in the country to barely win by one point I think UA held there own and should hold there heads up high even in defeat!

Doug described my Sunday in MSY trying to get to DAL. Cancelled flights and rolled over revenue stand-bys more or less almost killed me. I eventually got there around midnight, but I had to go to HOU first.

No Grasshopper......Gold Medallion and Skymiles, space positive, First Class, all F-R-E-E. I've traded points for 2 domestic and 4 International, First Class tickets this year.....No Charge.

Jumpseat? Bah hahahahahahaha.

PS...also use points to upgrade to FC while traveling on company tickets too. Great way to go to work
