Downdraft or what?

Hey guys, I did a cross country today from f70 to L77 that is in desert in California. I was on my return trip and on my climb and about 7500 feet the plane,a 172, I noticed the alt.,airpeed and vertical drop on a decend. At first I thought I had a malfunction in the pitot/static system and I was right over thermal airport so I started to make plans to make a alternate landing. This decent went on for it seemed 30 seconds or so,but than began to start climbing again normaly. Has anyone ever experienced this before also? Would it have been a downdraft or something else?
