http://money.cnn.com/2005/03/20/news...west/index.htm I say let them stay; if they can still pass the medical exams, and their PCs why force them to retire. But on the other hand, Delta enticed some of their younger then 60 pilot groups to retire early for the cost cutting purposes.

I agree, I personally think that they should be able to stay as long as they are able to pass the medical. Now, for selfish reasons, hopefully they argue over it until I am 60, and then raise it to 65 or 70. I have a feeling you will see the age 60 rule change in the next few years though.

Also a slippery slope when one tries to improve his position by imposing arbitrary rules on others. Which is in many ways the genesis of ALPA's support of the rule. Note that ALPA is now taking a new look at the issue.

WN will support it b/c they are making money. I don't think DAL or US for example will even look at the issue. If the FAR's do change i'm sure these companies will come up with some way to get people out of the door at 60.

And BTW the primary group looking to open the issue right now is ALPA. They are polling their members and studying the safety considerations. For obvious reasons, mandatory retirement has lost some of it's luster. |

Because typically an older pilot is a more senior pilot...aka higher paid for the same amount of work.

True but they are topped out on the pay scale so as you cycle them out you replace them with guys that make the same exact pay. And the more retirements the more training cycles you do. And assuming you have any company funded retirement bennies left, retired guys just become an expense with no production. If the reitirement age had been higher or not mandatory the airlines would have alreay saved billions in retirement funding.
