Default Shadow Program

So, there's a job-shadow program at one of the local private schools, and since I volunteered, I have two high school juniors hanging out with me this week at work. They get to eat with me, sit in on ground lessons and fly when possible (in anything with enough seats). The idea is to show them what it's like in our profession, and give them more than 20 minutes of aviation.

Anybody else participate in a program like this? I couldn't pass the opportunity up!!

I jumpsat on an A340 LAX-LHR, I stayed in the cockpit for the first hour, went back to the cabin had a proper drink, went back up to the cockpit chatted with the guys, went back to my seat again (it was boring up there) went to sleep, woke up as we were over Scotland, and walked up to the cockpit and took the jumpseat for landing (well until I got kicked out for a seatbelt malfunction, in first class - no other seats were avaliable!).

I learnt a lot about being a pilot that day - how boring cruise was!!

I learned about the program, and volunteered! None of the other instructors seemed to have any interest, but I sure did! What an opportunity!

None of the students are forced into it, either. They're paired up with people in a field that interests them, and nobody is forced to spend time with the lads. It's 100% volunteer.

Not bad, huh?

So what they don't have to go to school for a solid week?

Okay...thats awesome. Is it safe to have four people in a 172?
Do the two guys both want to be airline pilots or have a career in aviation? What are there career goals?

Without a doubt! Now, probably not with full fuel (depending on the size of all parties involved). I've flown 172s with four adult men! Now, we may have only had full fuel, but we were safe!

Oh jus wanted to know cause we couldn't take more then two people up in a 172 when I was getting my PPL full tanks or otherwise.
Granted it was summer time in TUS and between 110-115 degrees.

Lloyd, that is awesome that you are letting them tag along. The shadow program is how I got started in aviation. I am very thankful for the program, the instructors, and students that had to deal with me for that day (ours wasn't a week long). This was the only opportunity I had ever had to get a glimpse of the field and loved every minute of it. From then on I was hooked and still after the big goal. Thats my story...well the shorter less boring version.

It can be done. Now, it's going to take a bit of runway, and the climb rate won't be spectacular in those conditions. At those temps (and the accompanying density altitude), it's going to be a long, scary climb....

I've had five people in a C-182.

Me plus four jumpers, and two of those guys hadn't missed any meals.

The DZ owner claimed he had taken off with five jumpers before.

Ah, yeah....my avatar. I had some issues with my web hosting, and so all my crap is kind of not-accessable while it's getting fixed.

Guess I better get a new one...
