| ![]() A guy I work with drives the same distance as I do to work. Both of our vehicles transport one person. It's about 15 miles each way for both of us. His truck uses almost two gallons round trip and my 2001 Jetta 1.8T (so not a boring slow car) uses just under a gallon. So identical transportation is occuring but he's using twice the fuel I am. And I sometimes feel bad that I burn so much gas! It's not just the cars we drive, but also other choices we make. Like PhotoPilot says, ride a bike! I'm moving in a couple months. I'll be closer to work so I'll use much less gas to commute and I'll be able to ride my bike in the warmer months (if I can find a non-deadly route through Columbus, which could be difficult). |

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] And really, all you do with that danged Hummer is drive to the mall. What the heck justifies a 12 MPG 4x4 if it only sees dirt when you buy a bag of potting soil? I drove around Michigan's Upper Peninsula in an area that has lots of hills and gets pounded by over 300 inches of snow per year . . . and my Honda Accord did just fine. If you choose a big engine and a 4 inch lift kit over conservation of the environment and your pocketbook, don't complain to me. [/ QUOTE ] True dat dude. I can't complain enough about this. The worst part is those guys that still do 80 mph on the expressway because they think they can due to the four wheel drive they purchased to plow through 2" of snow in the burbs only to go flying off the road because they don't have a clue how to drive in the snow. I could complain for days about this. In fact, I do; just ask Emily. My next car is either going to be a Jetta TDI (mainly because low sulfer fuel is going to be all you can buy come January) or a Honda Civic. 40 mpg either way, and I can get rid of this d@mned minivan that gets 20 mpg. |

| [ QUOTE ] I am looking at buying the Accord V6 Hybrid within the next couple months. Great looking car and better gas mileage than my 4 banger Accord. [/ QUOTE ]The new Accord hybrid design is nice. An "ordinary" hybrid only saves fuel in the city due to recovering power during braking and coasting, but saves no fuel on the highway. The new Accord hybrid V6 gets fuel savings on the highway as well by shutting down half the cylinders in cruise. What's really cool is that Honda hybrid V6 is even more powerful than its ordinary V6, with better mileage. It is schweet. I'm waiting until they slap that bad boy in the Pilot and then I'm gonna get me one. ![]() |

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] Yeah, energy companies rarely think long term. They are almost never known to invest billions in exploration and opening new fields. [/ QUOTE ] There's a world of difference between investing in exploration for a resource which you already know you can sell and investing in new technologies that will allow you to move past that resource. If I were in charge of ExxonMobile or BP-Amoco or ChevronTexaco, I'd be spending billions of bucks on R&D for new sources of energy. It'd be a great way to make sure my company continues to be a market leader when the inevitable shift from fossil fuels to other sources of energy comes. |

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] I just say we drill Alaska and use it only for the U.S. Planes won't be running on any other energy source for a looong time... [/ QUOTE ] Know what they do with a large portion of the oil they get in Alaska right now? Ship it to Japan. Screw that. If you want to open new places to drill in Alaska, I say it's gotta stay here in the US, period. And if big oil doesn't like, then they don't get to drill. |

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] Whuh? DC standing up to 'big oil'? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, Clinton didn't do it, so why should I expect an administration with an oilman from Texas and an oilman from Wyoming to do so? |

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] Evildoer-Freedom hater, Tony! What are you, French? ![]() (I'm KIDDING people!) [/ QUOTE ] Well, I am trying to get some money out of a couple of companies that are headquartered there. Doing my part to reduce that trade deficit, dontcha know? ![]() Speaking of that, Doug, check your email in a few. |
