Default TSO\'d Headsets?

What does it mean if a headset is "TSO Approved"?? I know it relates somehow to TSO C-57 and C-58, but I can't find anything more specific....I can't even find C-57 or C-58. I've tried FAR/AIM, the FAA website, jetcareers, and a Google search to no avail. What is the advantage to buying a "TSO approved" headset? Help!!

Your headset need's to be TSO'd to use it in a part 135 or 121 operation.

so it doesn't suddenly burst into flames in the cockpit...

If you're flying a loud airplane, the David Clarks will work fine...they have a very low occurence of spontaneous combustion. If you're flying a quiet airplane, I recommend the Telex Airman 750...this also has a low occurence of cinged hair reports...

Do you know how/where I can find C-57 and C-58? I'd like to read them, just for fun.

Explain then why many 121/135 pilots are using non-TSO'd headsets.

Just use whatever you want. No-one has ever checked any of my head clamps to see if they're TSO'd, and I've never checked for the seal of approval before using one.

It's my understanding then, that they're breaking the law.

Companies and FAA inspectors don't always police this, but anything you connect to the aircraft has to be TSO'd.

At least this is what I've heard from quite a few people, I could be wrong. See §121.319, §135.150, §21.305, there may also be more in a specific company's op specs.
