| Senior Member | Hey Gang, I am giving a presentation on CRM for General Aviation pilots here in SLC on the 16th. Check OK3 Air's web page for details. Please attend if you are around. I am curious to poll you all though; what have been some of the best interactions you have heard from GA pilots with ATC. The assumption is that most GA flights are done single pilot or they are done with only one rated pilot in the plane. This means that ATC is your best asset for help while you are flying solo. The principle of CRM is to use all available resources for situational awareness and more importantly safety. So does anyone have any good stories of using ATC in unique ways? |

| How bout for starters...please bring a current sectional or WAC chart (if they are still making those). I know alot of VFR guys go blasting off with old charts or no charts b/c they have GPS and wander off into restricted areas and such. I would say that ATC has low expectations for private pilots and weekend warriors to start with. So dont think that your Tom Cruise image is going to be damaged because you ask for help finding an airport or need clarification on an intstruction. How bout instead of saying "Im lost I cant find the airport" try "How are we looking for Bumtown Regional?" A response like "Airports 10 oclock 12 miles", or "Turn 10 Degrees left for Bumtown" or something to those effects are common. You talking IFR too? |

| Senior Member | Yeah, IFR too. Those are great suggestions. Much of the presentation is based on knowing what you can get from ATC and no being afraid to ask it. There are many services that ATC can provide you with, but asking for them has to something that is not intimidating. I flew with an FAA guy today and he made a great point. He said that those how call up with a macho attitude while charging off into IFR conditions will most likely get minimal help from ATC. But those how are perhaps going in knowing it will be a challenge or admitting they are a low hour instrument pilot will be most likely well looked after by ATC. |

| Ophir, I dont know if you are fimilar with this column, but this ATC dude writes a good column and can really help you learn what happens in the dark rooms and how to make things work smoother between pilot and controller. Check it out. http://www.avweb.com/news/columns/182651-1.html |
