| Old Skool | hey mike, is it kosher for you to take a camera with you flying as long as you dont take a picture of anything you're not supposed to, or is that a big no no? |

| [ QUOTE ] hey mike, is it kosher for you to take a camera with you flying as long as you dont take a picture of anything you're not supposed to, or is that a big no no? [/ QUOTE ] There's two restrictions for me in the postion I hold: 1. Single seat aircraft aren't allowed to have cameras aboard unless it's specific to the mission.....ie- they want you photographing something if you see it. Not done much anymore, but used to be that cameras would be checked out prior to the mission in combat. Too many guys had nothing to take pics of, so they'd take pics of themselves or the weather or something like that. Intel didn't like that, so that practice went away. Peacetime, cameras are prohibited in single-seat aircraft, like I said before. 2. The specific jet I fly, I can't take pics of the cockpit due to certain systems and switches. There's no way to take a pic of the cockpit without really getting them in the pic, unless it's a ground trainer, or the sim.....or unless certain items are covered up. Cameras are allowed in crew planes, such as transports, tankers, and helos.......which is why you see pics from the insides of them alot. |

I bet you see a bunch of cool stuff that you go "doh, I wish I could get a picture of that". But I figured that there would be something in the cockpit that we're not supposed to see that would prevent you from doing that. Thx for the answer. |

| Senior Member | There was an MD-11 sitting up on the north ramp today when i passed through...as well as another one wearing world colors but a delta tail over by technical operations. |

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] Probably a MD-11 you saw -- the flapless glider! [/ QUOTE ] I was stuck in Pensecola for a whole bunch of hours once over the summer (combination of a Presidential TFR and a whole lot of thunderstorms) and was talking to a retired Delta captain who was waiting out the storms to fly his Baron back home. He flew the MD11 at one point and was talking about how after the accident in Halifax everybody who flew the -11 knew that they would be seeing a similar situation in the sim the next time they were there. I don't know the specifics but it had something to do with an inflight fire or engine failure and they were too high to safely land in Halfax and overshot the runway. Anyhow, he was saying that sure enough the next sim ride he got the same scenario. But he got it down on the runway. Apparently the sim op thought he had cheated because so far nobody had been able to land it safely. Apparently he was able to get it on the runway by side slipping the aircraft like a C172. The sim instructor didn't believe him until he tried it himself and sure enough it worked. Anyhow, it may be a flapless glider but it will come down like any other aircraft. Ethan |

| Agent Smith | There was an engine fire at the maintenace hangar which burned the leading and trailing edge flaps before it was extinguished. The aircraft had already been retired and since it was no longer in flyable condition, they've been scavenging parts off of it. |

| I know Fedex, UPS, and world airway fly those MD-11s. How much money can Delta make by selling those parts? I am just wondering. adreamer |

[/ QUOTE ] He got down in time because he was armed with the knowledge and urgency of the situation brought about from the Halifax Swiss Air MD11 accident. Hindsight is always 20/20 and future crews learned an important lesson from this tragic accident. Get it on the ground NOW! The Swiss Air crew elected to troubleshoot the problem and honestly, who could blame them? They unfortunately wasted precious seconds/minutes troubleshooting instead of just getting it on the ground. A lot of us, prior to this accident, probably would have done the same thing they did. A FedEx DC10 crew did an outstanding job of getting their aircraft on the ground in Newburg Pa a couple years ago after getting a cargo smoke/fire indication. The aircraft burned to the ground shortly after landing and everyone escaped uninjured due to the quick thinking of the crew. I'm sure they were thinking about the Halifax accident. BTW, slipping a large transport category jet is not a good thing and certainly not something I'd go around bragging about. Can it be done? Sure. It's an airplane. Is it smart? No. Not only are you putting a lot of stress on the vertical stab (not good in an Airbus ), but you run the risk of compressor stalling engines due to potentially blocking smooth airflow. Now you have even more problems to deal with if you flame something out while dealing with a fire or smoke situation. Why not just do a quick 360 near the field to lose altitude while throwing the gear out and applying speedbrakes? |

| Cheers Doug - much better. I the A300Capt raises lots of good points. I am sure if the crew of the Swissair flight knew they did not have the time they wouldn't have circled. |
