So I'm heading out to Newark today for a weekend of fun in NYC. I get off my inbound flight and head to the United counter to check in for the jumpseat. United has a policy that they will only take as many jumpseaters as they have seats. For example, the 757 "normally" has two jumpseats so they will take two jump seating pilots no matter how full the cabin is. That means, if there are 4 pilots trying to get home, and the flight is empty, they will take 2 pilots and put them in the cabin and leave the other 2 to find some other ride home. Needless to say this is a very outdated policy followed by hardly any other company. Most airlines will take you if they have room (very pilot friendly). Anyways, there were two of us on a fairly empty flight so we head up to meet the captain and "ask for a ride". Turns out there's only 1 jumpseat on this 757. The captain says, "who was here first" (never a good sign). The other pilot was going to work so I showed myself the door and headed to my next option which was a Continental flight. I check in and they will take as many people as they have seats so I have no problem getting on. Now here is the secret that will lead to many happy non-rev flight.......bring something for the crew. I usually bring chocolate cause its usually a safe bet that everyone will enjoy it. This trip was some holiday peppermint patties. They were so happy and appreciative that someone thought of them and rushed me right into a first class seat. Not bad. I soon found myself enjoying a prime first class meal and as many "beverages of choice" as I wanted. The glass was never empty and you get treated like a VIP. I know some people will say they don't have money for that but I bought 4 bags of candy at target for $4 so its not that bad and it makes people happy. Now I've got everyone in my family bringing candy for crews all over the country and livin the non-rev dream. Just a thought this holiday season. As for non-reving on Continental? By far one of the best airlines with great people! p.s. Don't forget the gate agents |

That possibly the most backwards policy I've ever heard on jumpseating..... [ QUOTE ] As for non-reving on Continental? By far one of the best airlines with great people! [/ QUOTE ] Now if only our RJs had first class. Oh wait, ALL the seats are first class..... [ QUOTE ] p.s. Don't forget the gate agents [/ QUOTE ] Damn right! If it weren't for us, you might not even GET to the crew. Plus, we're the ones that can change your seat assignment to first class <hint hint> |

Thats right...the CRJ has 50 miniature first class seats with 50 miniature first class meals!! Good idea on the non-revving. Great notes for all to take. Nothing like sucking up to the captain. I jumpseated with one captain who my dad checked out initially on the DC-9 years ago. Was one cool ride from start to finish- those guys were cooler than anything.
