Default Maybe I\'m crazy...

Would it make sense to install a device on the landing gear of jet that accelerated the rotation speed of the wheels to a speed somewhat near the ground speed of the jet before it touched down, thus reducing the wear of the tires? The only downsides I can see are added weight and less braking effect produced by the obliteration of the a few layers of tread. Thoughts?

I don't know, sounds like more hassle than it would be worth, and yet another thing to break down.

A system like that and the maintenance issues it would have would probably cost a lot more than replacing the tires when they wear out.

Good points.

Anyone know how much the airlines spend on rubber these days?

I've seen a 'wheel spinner' on a Citation a few yrs back that operated in and out of gravel strips. The owner said that not only did it help on tyre wear, but also helped with preventing stone damage to the airframe by not flicking as many stones up upon touchdown.

Edit: Forgot to mention this was a nose wheel modification only, not the mains.

I remember reading a thread similar to this a long time ago...

Basically, the weight and expense added is not worth the outcome, it's simply cheaper to replace the worn tires/brakes.

errr. which reading the thread, has already been said
