Default Sickest winds

Whats the worst winds you have had to deal with... I flew in today..
KCNM 262053Z AUTO 27031G44KT 10SM CLR 18/M02 A2972 RMK AO2 PK WND 27044/2047 SLP029 T01831017 58017

Landed runway 26.... pretty damn hairy in a Cherokee 140..YIKES

Thats probably the worst Ive dealt with in that light of an aircraft.. but then again Ive only been flying about 3 years..

I took my PPL checkride in winds sustained at 12, gusting to 25. It was fun in the 152.

The winds on my PPL checkride were probably the worst I have dealt with so far in my flying career. I was in a 152 and the winds were 350@17G25 and the paved runway at the airport was 8-26 (yes, that is 90º). Luckily for me, they also have a grass strip that is 18-36, so I used that for my checkride flight. The DE then wanted me to TRY landing on 26 for the crosswind landing ( I think he was thinking of incorporating the go-around into this one manuver!), so I lined up and the winds must have died for a second, because the 152 had plenty of rudder to keep the nose straight and it turned out to be a good landing, although the flight was very turbulent! The nice part about this was that the DE didn't make me do the regular ground reference manuvers, as he figured the pattern was one enough (as the reason for them is in the first place).

20 kt direct x-wind on my IFR checkride. I told the examiner "Um, doesn't this exceed the max crosswind component on the 172?" His response: "Son, I've got three more of these to do in ORL today. We'll just do low approaches instead of touch and gos."

Thank god he took the final landing......

Worst I've had was 25 knots X-wind in a Seminole, at night. Wasn't really a problem-- just no flaps, carry power and speed, aileron for the centerline and rudder for alignment. Either the plane will go straight or it won't, and if it won't it's time to dig out the sectional and find an airport with a croswind runway.

The real question is why would you fly a 140 with 31G44?!?!?!
Nothing is THAT important.

When one of my students was up for his private checkride recently, the winds were something like 20G25 and he told the examiner that he wouldn't feel comfortable flying in winds like that, nor would he fly in winds like that for a while after his checkride. I totally backed up his decision and his examiner did too. I think that it showed a much more mature "PIC mentality" and sticking to one's own personal minimums than just going no matter what the consequenses because an appointment had been set. He completed the oral that day and finished up the practical a couple of days later. Why subject yourself to potentially unsafe conditions, especially on a checkride?

just my .02
