| Senior Member | Hi all, I need to plan a cross country from PDK to MAC. My question is this, I can either go due east and get the heck out of the class B, which adds about 30 NM to the trip. Or.... I could go direct to MAC and get a clearance from ATL approach to transition through the class B. To date the only class B I've flown through is CLE, which in terms of amount of traffic is nothing compared to ATL. So for all you ATL area pilots out there, what's your take on this? I've no problem talking with ATL to get through, but I just don't know if it's a good idea to go puttering through ATL's airspace in a 172. Thanks. Naunga |

| I've gone through the ATL class B quite a few times, and they never seem to mind. I always hear quite a bit of other light GA traffic, too. Lot's of airports in their airspace...too many for them to be bothered by Skyhawks!!! |

ATL dep/app/center shouldn't have any problems helping you out. They will probably just skirt you around and under a shelve. It will be good experience. If you have any troubles....just tell them you are not very experienced with Bravo airspace and the underlying shelves. |

| Are you still a student, or do you already have your private? Make sure that you comply with 61.95, (Ops in Class B airspace) and 91.131 (same). If you are a student, you need some endorsements, including briefings on class B airspace. I say go for it. Might as well jump in with both feet. Make sure you, and your CFI, are comfortable with the class B airspace. It's part of the airspace system, you should be allowed to use it, provided you meet the FARs. Just remember, "Aircraft calling approach, standby..." does not constitute a clearance for flight in class B airspace. On a side note, I'm interviewing for a CFII job at PDK. PDK is an extremely busy GA field, if you are comfortable flying from PDK, you should probably be okay with going through the class Bravo. Good luck, let us know how it goes. |
