[ QUOTE ] Small plane crashes in remote area of Southern California, killing all four aboard Monday November 01, 2004 LEBEC, Calif. (AP) A small plane crashed on a remote hillside near Los Angeles, killing all four people aboard and sending authorities on a 12-hour hunt to track the wreckage through the aircraft's emergency beacon. The airplane, found early Monday, was believed to be en route to Harris Ranch, an inn and dining complex with an airstrip in the San Joaquin Valley near Coalinga, the Kern County Sheriff's Department said. The single-engine, six-seat Cessna 182 apparently went down about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, said Donn Walker, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. The crash triggered the plane's emergency locator transmitter, and state officials asked the county and the Civil Air Patrol to look for the source of the signal somewhere between Santa Maria and Gorman. Walker said the pilot did not file a flight plan. The plane was found in a remote area near Tejon Ranch about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, authorities said. [/ QUOTE ] Two questions: 1 - A 6-seat 182..???? is this correct 2 - Just curious how many do or do not file a flight plan on a XC flight. If you do file a flight plan, is there a 'cutoff' distance where you consider not filing. The reason I ask is the flightplan has been pounded into my brain since I started training. I cannot imagine flying a XC without one. Maybe that's just my newness (is that even a word?). |

Usually when I fly a longer x-country I file for IFR. If I'm VFR, I don't file. The aircraft was either a 182 or 6 seats. The press isn't the best at this. |

[ QUOTE ] 2 - Just curious how many do or do not file a flight plan on a XC flight. [/ QUOTE ] If I'm flying a cross country VFR, I'm with a student. If that's the case, then I'll ensure that a flight plan has been filed. If I'm pleasure flying, or even working - but running the show alone - I'm on an instrument flight plan. It's a moot point then. |

I always try to make and file a flight plan if the flight is more then 50 nm but thats probably because its been pounded into my head since the beginning and IFR if IMC (ofcourse) or a long xc even in VFR conditions

I rarely used to file a flight plan. I did get flight following the whole way though.
