| According to the local reports, a cargo outfit out of Willow Run (KYIP) had a 747 out last night. They had an engine 'problem' and declared an emergency. Upon landing, they discovered that one of the engines was MISSING! Apparently it fell off somewhere along a 15 mile line crossing part of Lake Michigan and the SW lower peninsula just west of Kalamazoo. It has yet to be recovered. It's just making the news. As soon as I find an on-line article I'll post a link. - PhotoPilot |

| Got it! There are even pictures . . . 747 LOST an engine . . . That's one company where I won't be applying for a job. Quote of the day: "After landing, airline personnel discovered the engine was completely gone, FAA officials said." |

| Agent Smith | Only problem is that most maintenance forms are in "carbon copy" so they're going to have a heck of a time! Unless, of course, it was an extreme vib problem where it's good that the engine DID separate. |

| This is not the first time it has happened - it happened to an Evergreen 747 a whie ago, in the Northwest. These were both outer engines, when it is the inner engines it seems to cause more problems. You know the 747 can actually do a 3 engine ferry flights. |

| now i'm not a pilot and all, but it seems like you would notice if something that big and heavy all of a sudden fell off the plane...Weird. I wonder if it's still over at willow run - maybe i'll go check it out... |

| Unless I'm mistaken the pilots can't even see the engines from the cockpit of a 747. On many airplanes they can't even see the wingtips. Loosing the whole pylon would acctually affect the handling of the airplane less, since they also lost the drag of the dead engine. Engine pylons are designed to shear off without damaging the wing. | yeah i didn't figure either pilot could actually see it, but it seems like it would put the plane off balance because it is so heavy. and that would be noticible. |
