Default Pro Rata Share

What exactly does pro rata share include? Are private pilots required to pay for all parts of a flight (including operating costs, fuel, oil, etc..)? I have never completely understood the definition of pro rata share.

If you buy a 12 pack and drink it yourself it's 16 bucks.

If you have a buddy over and you each drink 6, you make your pal chip in 8.

If you have 3 people over and you each have 3, everyone has to pay 4 bucks.

That's pretty much pro rata share.

Ed, what happens when your mate spills one of your beers, that you paid for at pro-rata. And to make it worse - you had to clean it up!

Good times this weekend!

Friendly warning: never confuse your mates with your buddies, that's all I'm sayin'!

He buys his beer in bottles that are too small. Gotta hit that OE (8-ball)

Clearly the idea is to convince your 3 mates that you paid 16 bucks, thereby making your beer free. Not that I've ever done that.
