I was sitting at lunch today and saw a couple of Army people come in. It occurred to me that they, and all members of the armed services, are supporting a long a proud tradition of defending this country.

They do something that, as much as I want to, I will never be able to do for various reasons, and for that I am extremely thankful.

From the National Guardsmen dealing with disasters like hurricanes to the Navy supply officer, to the Army Helicopter pilot, to the Air Force pilot flying A-10's over a war zone, to the Special Ops guys who's work will probably never be revealed to the public.

Finally to the guy working in the recruiting office.

Sure there are bad apples. Sure there are people who, being just people, make mistakes, but they are the exceptions not the rule.

On a whole our soliders, sailors, and airmen serve our country with honor and pride.

We have seen a lot of talk lately about immigrants serving in the military who betray our trust, but again they are the exception.

I can speak from personal experience on that. My grandfather, an immigrant from Italy, served with distinction as an Officer in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He was one of those who helped to crack the Japanese's code on Pearl Harbor (although he was stationed there after the attack).

Just as he was an immigrant from an enemy country and served the U.S. loyally, I am sure there are those from Iraq etc. who are serving in the same manner now.

So I guess what I am trying to say in this long rambling post is simply thank you.

my little brother is going over as a marine reserve pfc to fight in january......my dad was an army officer, my aunt and uncle were in teh navy, my other uncle was a marine officer. I have nothing but the utmost support for our troops and will fight anyone to the ground who dares say anything. Needless to say our family is pretty sad, but this is what he signed up for. he wants to fight for our country and do his part. If i could be by his side i would. god bless those soldiers who are over there and those still stateside. its so easy for others to sit back and talk $h#t. it takes a real man to put on the uniform.

You’re right! We should all be very proud of our Armed Forces, not only the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force but the Coast Guard too. But please don’t confuse one thing with the other; one thing is to defend our country, another is to create war in another.

But then again, that's not the military's fault.

But condemn the mission. While most of the military actions the US has undertaken in it's history involved "creating war" in other countries the result was freeing millions upon millions. Not a bad mission.

Very nice topic! I to want to thank all of the military service personnel for all that they do. Eeeg made an excellent point about the war, and I agree with him. Regardless of your opinion on the war we should still support the troops.

Again, thanks to all our men and women in the armed forces. I have so much respect and admiration for you all. I to am very proud of men and women in the armed forces

Flyover, you are completely right. And that's the reason I served.

But us here in the U.S see things a little more rosy than other people. Life actually changed after September 11th for some people, but not that much for alot.

How would you feel if some other country invades us?
You wouldn't like that very much, I know I wouldn't. Simply because we are set in our ways, and wouldn't like another country force feeding us another way of life.

Just a quick point about Iraq that many people were unaware of. Iraq had been shooting at us for years! It was almost a daily occurence in IRAQ in support of Operation Southern Watch/Northern Watch This happened so much, that the media rarely made mention of it. I remember this occuring everytime I was there between 1999-2002 in support of OSW. Sadam even went as far as to place bounties on specific assets. I know in the E-3 we had a 100,000 USD bounty on our head everytime we flew. Believe me I thought about this a lot. Had any other country been shooting at us with AAA/SAM's I think we would have never waited that long to kick their ass. IMO that deserves an A$$ kicking right there, shooting at us, trying to take lives. I'm sure mike can back me up here. I suppose you sat CSAR alert in Kuwait before? The media loves to distort the facts, and point blame elsewhere

Pretty good point Bullmastiff. Don't even get me on the media subject. Put it this way, I hate the media so much I don't watch the news, it's way to full of #####. A good example of this was the Hurricane coverage here in South Florida...

When I was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Saddam seemed to really start his all his Cr@p around the Holidays, be it 4th of July, Thanksgiven, Christmas... I was always on alert for those dates.

True. One of the things that's been interesting to revisit is the gloom and doom perspectives from Europe, particuarly Germany, after WWII. Many though the occupation was lost, that the Nazis were resurging and that US policies were hopelessly out of touch with reality. There was lots of pressure to just give up and pull out. It's a lesson in patience and having a just cause behind you. It took almost 50 more years to completely liberate Germany and we are just now pulling our troops out.

It's also notable how few people realize that the ultimate objective of our "opposition" in the Middle East is control of the oil fields and the subsequent destruction of the US economy. Stakes are pretty high for our way of life, and livelihood.

They simply make everything more dramatic than what it is then smile after they report a tragedy. They were loving it! Channel 7 Fox here in South Florida is the worst. They all had a field day with these Hurricanes. They would go to every Home Depot and ask people if they were buying plywood for their windows and stupid things like that. Oh yes, now I know what you mean. Yes, it is dumb when they ask those type of questions, I've even see reporter ask another reporter standing in 90 mph winds, "Is it windy?"....
