| Agent Smith | Everyone have a look at this site.. It's more or less a website of a collection of links people have found elsewhere. So perhaps instead of posting entire articles in a posting, maybe just reference the article via a link. Seems like articles get posted here, then google sees the complete article and then I'm hosting content for the entire open internet. I think at least 30Gb of the normal 100Gb of bandwidth this website uses is little more than other aviation websites linking in to read an entire article posted on jetcareers. It doesn't add any more content, but once the googlebot hits the site, good lord, now I'm hosting material for the DNC, RNC, ATA, Air Nairobi, that 'girl who's putting her virginity on eBay' et al. See an interesting article? Post the link, but when you cut-n-paste copyrighted material in it's entirety, I'm not too sure I'm happy with being a 'mirror site' for the world. I really don't mind the search engines trolling the forums for data, but when most of the referals jetcareers have been receiving have been for political discussions, news articles and about nothing else, it gets annoying... and expensive So post the link not the article. Great Example for saving Doug bandwidth: Article Great Example of Jetcareers becoming a 'mirror site': News Article And no offense to people that were involved in either. |

| Agent Smith | Well, after the Hurricane "Francis" thing last week ate about a month's worth of bandwidth, I discovered that other websites were starting to point to the forums for other full articles like refugees on a UNICEF truck. So it was either adjust the 'ROBOTS.TXT' file to exclude the forum directory from the search engines and lose a lot of relevant links or just say "Hey folks, there's a better way to go about this". |

| You should pin this up at the top for awhile...so everyone gets a chance to read it before it gets lost in the forums. |

| I was surprised you didn't kill the "Hurricane Francis" thread right off the bat... Yeah, yeah, it brought in lots and lots of lurkers, but as you can see, 99.5% of them went away after the event (Frances was gone) so your ROI (Return On Investment) for the excess bandwidth probably was no where close to what it will (or could) cost you... This is such a specialized site that an average person isn't going to sign up or click throught to your specialized advertisers if they end up here on accident (while searching for "Hurricane Francis")... I've hosted enough web site to know that a spike in lurkers doesn't usually turn into any type of real return (except for excessive bandwidth usage and potential site slowdowns for your regular users)... |

If you take a shower in the morning and get dressed, drive to work and handle a thousand things that thousands have touched, I'd say that it's better to wash your hands BEFORE you tinkle.... My hands are the dirty part. My yoke is pretty clean at that point.... My yoke...I'm good. |

| Agent Smith | Well there IS that joke about the Air Force officer and the Marine enlisted going to the bathroom... The Marine whips it out, urinates and starts to leave the room without washing his hands. The Air Force officer looks over and snidely says, 'That's why we Air Force people refer to you Marines as Grunts. In the Air Force, they teach us to wash our HANDS after we mitricate" The Marine stops, snaps around and says, "That's great, captain, but in the Marines, they teach us to AIM". |

[/ QUOTE ]I think you misunderstood the original thread... the bandwidth has to deal with people linking to the site.. lurkers aren't the main concern and really don't affect the bandwidth.. but when we put full articles into the thread, google links onto that which brings the lurkers.. and the lurkers in turn link to the thread showing the entire article instead of linking to the origin of the original article.. that's where the bandwidth comes into play... lurkers are not a problem but direct article linking from other sites can become a problem and slow the processing of the server down. does that explain a little more? They each step up to their respective urinal and proceed to do their business. Once they're done, the Air Force...guy....heads over to the sink while the Marine heads for the door. The Air Force guy smirks and tells the Marine, "In the Air Force, they teach us how to be clean and wash our hands after we urinate." The Marine smirks right back and says, without missing a beat, "In the Marine Corps, they teach us not to pi$$ on our hands". |
