| [ QUOTE ] I think you misunderstood the original thread... the bandwidth has to deal with people linking to the site.. lurkers aren't the main concern and really don't affect the bandwidth.. but when we put full articles into the thread, google links onto that which brings the lurkers.. and the lurkers in turn link to the thread showing the entire article instead of linking to the origin of the original article.. that's where the bandwidth comes into play... lurkers are not a problem but direct article linking from other sites can become a problem and slow the processing of the server down. does that explain a little more? [/ QUOTE ] So what you are saying then is that the full article being posted creates a larger page to be loaded everytime someone views it, and a larger page obviously requires more bandwidth to load (as opposed to a simple, short link, to the original news article on someone elses site, utilizing their bandwidth)? Just like a very long thread takes more bandwidth to load than a thread with only one or two posts, correct? Or a popular thread utilizes more bandwidth than an unpopular thread that because it is viewed more often and hence that data needs to be transfered more often, which in turn utilizes bandwidth, correct??? Am I on the right page here? |

| Big Chief's Woman | no...imagine this... your looking up a particular topic via google... you find an article on a website that's already printed in it's entirety on that website.. so instead of finding the original article, you post a link to it on another forum... now everyone on that other forum wants to see the article which brings them to this website for no particular reason but for them to see the article. the hurricane thread was humorous at the time and we had no idea on the effect it would have on the site...so in essence, i take back saying that the lurkers weren't part of the cause and effect. i didn't think they were, but after talking with doug some more - it actually did affect the site... so that with that, we don't want happening all the time...so if we put links on instead of the entire article, we minimize the possibility of google loving this site! haha that's why it would be better to post the pertinent information of the article and a link to it rather than the full article because google will probably gobble that up and we'll end up having more linkage problems causing the same effect we had last week with hurricane frances thread.... I know we used to ask for the same thing a while back and then started slacking after a while and let people put up full articles.. but now, after the google instance, we want to ask again to just use the pertinent information you want people to know and link the entire original article to the site.... edit: actually, after reading your last thread again (cuz i skimmed it), i would say that that is part of the issue too... most of it has to do with how long it takes to process the amount of people on the site, how large the threads are and how many are posting at any one time...it all takes processor time. |

[/ QUOTE ] Comprende... And a good explaination to boot... (See Doug, was that so hard???) In my defense, I mentioned the lurker issue during the hurricane thread, even posted a thread asking Doug to kill the hurricane thread because it was slowing the site... Whenever there is enough viewers (lurkers and/or registered) to slow the access to a site, you know you are sucking down some serious bandwidth... It's fun to watch the big numbers of hits... Until the hosting bill shows up... I was merely trying to help, based on my past experiences with hosting mine own and client sites... | Big Chief's Woman | well, thanks for the help! now that we know what to expect.. we'll just try to deter! sometimes it's hard tho cuz it's kinda fun to see all the lurkers show up for something we might find as mundane or unusual... makes it interesting when google puts us at the top of their list too.. we know you mentioned it in the hurricane thread and since we never had a problem like that happen before - sometimes you have to learn the hard way or no way at all...so we figured we'd just let it run it's course whch was why we didn't delete it at the time. when it comes to doug.. just keep in mind that this is still his private living room, still a private website and when he asks for such simple things, he doesn't expect to get the type of response you put out there....had it been a suggestions instead of what seemed like a confrontation, it might have gone a bit smoooooother....I felt the need to kinda smooth things over and explain in a little bit of detail so all the bickering will like go away...we know you were only trying to help (another reason I decided to explain in further detail)... but maybe a different way of conveyance would have gone over better?! i wouldn't worry bout it now tho.. as long as everybody understands the issue, then all should be peachy keen! [/ QUOTE ] Actually if you both go back and read what I wrote in my VERY first post in this thread, you'll see I wasn't contradicting Doug at all... My point of that post was (in different words, but the same meaning) "Yes, posting full articles will bring many lurkers which will increase bandwidth usage and will increase costs. I agree that you don't want people doing this, to help keep lurkers and bandwidth usage at the minimum required to maintain the site". But because of some PM's he sent me earlier that day which were in regard to a COMPLETELY diffent topic, Doug decided to try and view this as some kind of contradiction as opposed to agreeing with him... I think he might have been in need of a nap... |

| Agent Smith | FalconCapt: Pissing matches with the webmaster are always kind of "ugly". Especially here because I'll give you a lot of chain to run with, then I'll cut it, let you jump over the fence and shut the gate unexpectedly. I've got a limit on my temper just like everyone else. |

| Hey Doug, Have you considered some software such as Cold Link to stop people from hotlinking from jetcareers.com and using the bandwidth? From what I understand this would not effect google, it would only stop people from using jetcareers' bandwidth to put information on there site, which is what I think Kristie was saying the main problem was. I’m certainly not trying to get in a "pissing match" or anything, just offering an idea! |

| Agent Smith | Yeah, I've got about three or four different solutions which I'm looking at and I appreciate the link because I haven't run across ('Acrost', as we say in Tulare) that one yet! |

| [ QUOTE ] Yeah, I've got about three or four different solutions which I'm looking at and I appreciate the link because I haven't run across ('Acrost', as we say in Tulare) that one yet! [/ QUOTE ] It sounds prety cool: [ QUOTE ] The ColdLink iis isapi filter or apache module transparently maps and rewrites protected urls dynamically in realtime within every page served from your site. Your site continues to work normally, even when the pages are linked from search engines or other sites. Users can even bookmark your pages for later return because the page will contain new valid links. Any url that a hotlinker might use to hotlink protected images or other files from your site in their pages has a lifetime of just 5 minutes. After that, any hotlink is dead. Forever. Even custom scripts won't help because the odds of guessing the next valid url are infinitesimal* [/ QUOTE ] If you decide to go with it, let me know how you like it! |
