An MD-88 on its way into Daytona today just about landed in Ormond Beach, passengers said he was about 50ft off the runway when he did a go-around and circled back to land on 16 at DAB. Lots of passengers complained, but the Capt. swore he was at Daytona, just saw another aircraft on the runway so he went around.....

Probably thought the VOR was at DAB and just tracked it on in.......

[ QUOTE ] Probably thought the VOR was at DAB and just tracked it on in....... [/ QUOTE ] isn't the crew supposed to brief the approach prior to the flight and understand the locality of a VOR they'll use in relation to the airport they're arriving at. I know things are different/not necessarily as simple up in the air, but this isn't me or other private pilots landing at a wrong airport, it's a professional who is paid to have it down. |

Which airline was it? I've heard Spirit landing at MLB before, but I think that was a charter. Not sure if they fly into DAB. Approach even asked the guy "And just to confirm, you're final destiniation is MLB." There are a LOT of airports in the DAB area. Ormand is just north, is actually a decent size, and has the VOR on the field for the whole area. Odds are this guy was tracking the VOR, requested a visual, and called the wrong airport in sight.

It was Delta Airlines, ILS was out of service at Daytona, maybe that had something to do with it.

What happens to the Captain and FO when they land at the wrong airport? Fired?

I know a guy who landed at the wrong airport at a different airline, they were given remedial training and a 'part-609' checkride with the FAA in attendance and that's about all that happened.

I guess it is worse when you land an airliner at a military airbase.

Doug - it's section 709 now. They did away with 609 a few years back. Same thing though. |

Under section 709 it basically says that at any time they want to, the FAA can ask any airman to be re-examined for proficiency (or more to the point - deficiency!)

Latest is that the Capt. called the Chief Pilot as soon as he landed. Delta let him fly out the next day so I think he got away with it. P.S. It was a Mad Dog pilot |
