| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] There was no logic to my previous comment...I was just sad because I don't want Bogberto to leave! noooooo! [/ QUOTE ] Well Key Bank and seniority willing, I'll hopefully be CRJ in PHX in about a year or two. Granted, I probably won't be able to hold captain for at least another five after that. |

| Junior Member | Kellwolf will never compare to Bogberto's captain-ness. At least not for a little while. Then he will. Phoenix is very short on its pilot population! |

| You can't swing a dead cat around Phoenix without knocking over a half-dozen pilots. I think the only place worse is Florida!! I don't think Nashville would be a half-bad place to live at all ... and if my company had a base there I'd think hard about bidding it (the commute would certainly be easier). |

| Old Skool | Cost of living in TN is pretty cheap, too. I had reverse sticker shock looking at houses here coming from FL. |

| [ QUOTE ] I'll hopefully be CRJ in PHX in about a year or two. . [/ QUOTE ] Chances are ... won't happen. In one year we're going to be a very different company (based on the assumption of U going away), and PHX will be the super-senior base again. As of right now, the most junior CA in PHX has 5 years with the company. If U tanks, many of us in the left seat will return to the right, and we're heading to PHX. Keep happy thoughts about IAD, ORD, and ATL. BNA, DEN, and PHL will be gone. Just a hunch, though I've been wrong twice this year. [ QUOTE ] Kellwolf will never compare to Bogberto's captain-ness. [/ QUOTE ] Aww, that makes my day. Good thing she doesn't know how bad of a CA I am! |

| How did you lose your PHX base? I don't know how the whole bidding thing works, but I thought that once you had a position (e.g. PHX CRJ900 CA) it was yours until you vacated it. Or, is every position open at every bid? |

So, if there's no more room at the inn, you get your second choice, third choice, etc. |

| [ QUOTE ] How did you lose your PHX base? [/ QUOTE ] The CRJ series is similar to the 757/767 and A318/319/320/321 because of the common type rating, so if you're holding a seat in one, you're holding it in all. If you can fly one, you can fly them all. When a domicile is being reduced in size, the pilots getting kicked out have to go somewhere. Pretty much every airline would have this procedure spelled out in the contract, as we do. So, most recently we had to displace about 25 CAs and 25 FOs out of DEN; they get moved wherever their seniority will hold, aka The Bump, and have the ability to then displace someone junior to them from their new base, aka The Flush. Of the 25 CAs in DEN getting moved out, all of them are senior to me, and about 15 are heading to PHX. Due to that, myself and a few other junior CAs have been flushed out. The fun continues down the line, too, to the point that no-one is safe. Capt XYZ displaced out of DEN and into PHX, causing me to get displaced from PHX to BNA (my next choice for a base). Because of this, Capt CDE in BNA, the most junior gal, is now bumped out to her next choice, which is most likely IAD (the bottom of the pile). So instead of a simple move of about 25 CAs, you eventually move about 40-50. Yet another chapter in The Glamourous Life Of The Airline Pilot. Hope this helps. If not, ask away. | A well-written chapter, thanks. The PHX base should be expanding at some time, because the rumor is that HP wants us to have another 25 900s. But, with a possible shake-up at US, those spots will probably be taken by senior CAs anyhow. HP has been trying to give us more work, but we don't have the capacity right now and I'm sure we won't have any available capacity until US Air settles down. Did you have a new pilot bid start today? The flight schedule changed quite a bit today. All the UA flight numbers changed so that the first 2 numbers define the A/C type, and we added a few new cities. |

| Junior Member | Just for fun... As someone with no seniority whatsoever, are there places I can "expect" to be based when I start working? Hopefully I will be graduating from Arizona State University's flight program in 2009. They work with Mesa, if that helps with Chris Walken-type trivial psychic predictions. |

I might just stay in BNA for awhile, since I can hold a line. Might be better than sitting reserve for the next 5 years. If / when U tanks, I'll probably go back to the right seat. New bid started a week ago Sunday, but United probably just changed the schedules around. I know my leg to DTW leaves 10 minutes later last night. Last night, that amounted to a 1:10 wait from push to gear-up. Dang hurricane! For a brand newbie right outta sim, you can always expect the most junior base at any airline. For us, it's a close tie between PHL and IAD on the CRJ. All ERJers are in CLT now, and the Dash ... Ray would have to verify, but I think DEN is junior. In 2009, who knows what airlines will still be here. I think you're going to see 1-3 regionals disappear in the next 10 years. |
