Wi-Fi Access on Airliners

Ok, why is it that this service is not yet available on US airliners??? It is on other foreign airliners! (I smell FO's getting a quick run on Instant Messenger!)

My guess...

Same reason other countries get medicines years before we do (and cheaper too) US GOVERNMENT Regulations.

Money, it takes money to rewire an airplane. I think that the 7E7 will be pre-wired for internet service.

But what's interesting it that on every flight that I've taken in recent history the FA comes over the PA and says that it's OK to use computers so long as you can disable the wireless part of your laptop. Interesting considering that if you put wireless in the plane, your going to have all of that RF to begin with so why bother to tell people to turn it off at all? What are they going to do, wrap the pax cabin with RF absorbing material so as to not affect flight instruments? [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

I bet that Swiss air MD-11 that crashed in Nova Scotia wished the US Gov't regulated their in flight entertainment. [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] Though I hate Gov't Regulalations, they do keep us safe! [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif[/img]

Prices aren't bad at all, I'd pay 30$ to keep myself occupied for a good part of the 12 hour flight from MSP-NRT. Just expect there to be many posts in the forums when I do that ;-)

Or that the crew that installed the inflight entertainment system hadn't bypassed the cabin bus switch.

Or the the "fire proof" insulation on the MD-11 was really fire proof.

Technically that plane was subject to US GOVERNMENT regulations because the flight originated in the US. Unless I am terribly misinformed, (which happens) flights originating or landing in the US must meet all FAA safety regulations.
