Advice on where to transfer

Hi everyone. Today I just started my sophomore year at community college. Its going great. Anyway, in about 3 or 4 months I have to start applying to unversities to transfer by next fall 2005. Ive narrowed my choice of schools to UC Santa Barbara, CSU Long Beach, or UC Irvine. Here is where I need some input.

I really want to be in the city. Ive lived in a small town almost my whole life and I need some action! I also want to continue my flying lessons while in school. My question, what are the pros and cons of flying in busy airspace (Long Beach, Irvine area) compared to a less busy airspace (Santa Barbara). In addition all of my school choices have my intended major. Any opinions/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

As far as flying in busy and non-busy airspace. I think flying in busy airspace makes you better on the radio. Other than that I cant help you much as I am from Iowa.

Well, if you want some action, UC-Santa Barbara usually shows up as one of the best party schools in the country. And Santa Barbara is absolutely gorgeous.

Isn't the airport there a class C airport? It's not like you'd be flying over the middle of a soybean field!

UCSB...if you can afford the rent! It's right on the beach and right next to the airport. Plus, I think some of the faculty run a flying club!

The best school between those three academically is US Santa Barbara. But I think that the flight schools at Santa Barbara aren't worth your time. KSBA is a Class C airport, but the flight schools are trash. I've heard more horror stories about those flight school than anywhere else. They are super expensive and they have in the past had problem with paper work with the FAA. US Santa Barbara is a beautiful campus and a very school but the thing about it that I don't really like, its quite some distance from actual downtown SB. I fly just south of KSBA and the airspace around KSBA and all the airports within a 50 mile radius aren't that busy at all.

If you want challenging airspace then fly as some place like Long Beach Airport(KLGB) or John Wayne(KSNA). The second best school I would go to is UCI. That is a great school and has a good program all around and its close to some very nice airports in the area where you can train at. CSU Long Beach would be the third school I would go to. But seeing howI don't know what you want to major in then I can't tell you what is a better school. I think you should go to UCI or CSULB, more because they are closer to some better airport. Also give Ed (SkyGuyED) a shout, he is a Flight instructor in the area and one damn good one. He is I believe going to be going to UCI or CSULB. So that might even be better for you with the flying and going to school.

I'm in the same boat as you sort of, except I'm already done with Community College. I'm looking at different schools, mostly private ones, but I'm also trying to figure out where I can finish the rest of my training. I will most likely be finishing with Ed if all goes as planned.

Out of my depth here. But since advise is free
I'll give some.

The great majority seam to think that UCSB is the place to go. So be it. They also seam to think that the cost of living is high, rents and such like. Most likely true.

So; my advise is this. If you decide to go to UCSB since the school is on the ocean and right next to the airport. cut down on your expenses.

Buy yourself a 24-28 ft sail boat, cost less than 10 grand. Genset[for electricity] for another $500.00 and anchor off the school.

Dinghy back and forth to the beach, Your own place for study and "entertaining" a free get away when ever you want to go for the weekend. [Women LOVE sail boats}

SAVE A GROUP OF MONEY ON RENT and spend it on flying. [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

For best overall quality of life I would pick UCSB. If you get bored then L.A. is only an hour to an hour and a half drive depending on traffic.

Have you visited any of the schools you are considering? If you live in the L.A. area then you might want to go visit these schools if you havent already.

It's been a while since I was based out of SBA, but I believe you are correct; the training available there could be better. If someone already has their license / ratings, it can be a great base. For a newbie, it might be better to go to Sheble or ADP for training during school breaks.

There are two flight schools at SBA, Spitfire and Red Baron I believe. They might have combined. But the owner of Spitfire was and is "Andrea Read". I've heard some shady things that she has done with her school and with her Flight Instruction that she gives. I would avoid whatever school she is at like the plague. [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] Spitfire is really expensive if I recall, and red baron is a little cheaper. I would say still again your best bet for better flying in at KLGB or KSNA.
