Crystal, in all seriousness... I have given tours to plenty of ERAU-PRC students when I get to PHX on trips... I have a couple of friends who are Seniors up there and they usually come down for dinner and a tour... I'll try and hook you up with one of them and maybe you can come down with the group some time...

| Old Skool | [ QUOTE ] But if you like flying junk, go ahead and go with the FBO. [/ QUOTE ] Odd. All of the 172s I fly out of my FBO (well, when they were planes and not scrap aluminum) were 172SPs in excellent condition. The Seneca? Well, it's older than I am (it's like a 74), but it's in top condition. Don't let the glossy academys and colleges sway you away from FBOs. There are good ones out there, but there are also some crappy ones. Rule #1 do your research on ANY school. Now as far as loan advice for Riddle.... When I was looking at the DAB campus, I had it all worked out with loans and my measly $1000 scholarship. Don't get me started on the lack of scholarships for non-traditional students. Then one of the loans fell through, and I was like "Well, what now?" Solution: distance learning! Same degree, less price. You can train at an FBO which saves you TONS of cash (and you actually come out with more actual FLIGHT time), and you can study at your own pace. You seem like a highly motivated individual as far as school goes, so this may work for ya. Right now I'm a multi-commercial rating away from an AS in Professional Aero, and 7 classes away from my BS. It's gonna cost me about $5000 for the degree. |

Actually I was just comparing to the planes I've seen at the FBO's I've visited. I consider a plane with crappy paint and interior a piece of crap. If someone has enough money to keep the paint and interior nice I bet it's going to be in top mechanical condition as well. If I owned a plane for buisiness the paint and interior would be the last thing I worried about unless I was bringing in a lot of money like a flight school does. I dont know, that's just me I guess. I do care about the shape the interior and exterior is in. Tom

a quick comment on the "backup degree" thing. There are a TON of jobs out there that want you to have a degree in something, they don't care what, and they aren't McD's managers. For example, I am graduating in december from Univ. of Michigan with a BA in Anthropology emphasis on Culture. Now what on earth am I going to do with that degree? Easy, I'm going to work at a hospital doing clinical research. Their degree requirements? a social science degree and good people skills. Major in what you want because it is interesting not because you feel you "have" to do it. Don't be afraid to change either. I made a fairly drastic jump from Materials Science Engineering to Anthro, at the end of my soph. year. Would it have been easier to stay in engineering? Maybe for some, but not for me. The classes were nothing like i wanted/expected and I really didn't like it. Would I be making more money if i stayed in engineering? Hell yeah, i have a friend who will be making almost twice what I am when i start working full time (he's an engineer). But I'll enjoy my job now and to me that is worht the lower pay. So I guess what I'm saying is, don't necissarily get a degree because you think it'll be useful, get a degree in something that you are really interested in. and Cristl, when a door is shut a window is opened, but we often spend so long looking at the closed door that we miss seeing the window. Take a night to sleep on it and try looking at this mess from a different angle tomorrow. You might be able to figure something else out. DOn't worry they want to take your money! they will gladly put you in debt so they can take more money from you (they being Riddle Financial Aid)

Thats how I look at the degree thing to. I almost want to do the full on flight program, but I figure a business degree will be more useful with my other interests. Tom

[ QUOTE ] I was hoping this wouldn't turn into a drawn-out argument regarding *school choice* in relation to financial resources. [/ QUOTE ] Unfortunately that happens a lot with this crowd. Just stick to your guns, and go for what you want. There are some positives and negatives to this school, but you'll find out for yourself. You'll see a lot of people coming around saying that their school is best, or this or that path is correct, but here's the catch when talking about any particular school with a group of folks from mixed backgrounds: Most people have no idea what they're talking about, even less people know what they're talking about from indirect sources, and a very small amount of people know what they're talking about for real. Your job is to sift through the garbage and get real answers.

[ QUOTE ] GET A SUGAR DADDY!!!! [/ QUOTE ] Excellent idea. Does anyone know the income level needed to qualify as a sugar daddy? I've been telling my friends that I'm willing to be one, but they say I don't make enough. [ QUOTE ] I'm jelous. I cant wait to fly an instrument approach at night through clouds and pop out at about 300 and see all those lights. Tom [/ QUOTE ] 300'? Why so high? 100' is much ... better and does a great job of reminding you that we don't get paid enough to do this job. Working on campus in PRC is a cool option. I spent 3+ years being part of the brown army and had a blast. Riddle will probably bend over backwards to keep you there because they really want your money.
