Default Wichita\'s final 757 to take a bow

Hundreds of Boeing Wichita workers will gather today to bid farewell to a program that touched the lives of thousands of area aviation workers and marked a milestone for Boeing. Boeing Wichita workers have finished their work on the last 757 fuselage to roll off the line at the assembly building on MacArthur Road.

The 757 program, which was launched in the late 1970s, will officially end this fall when Boeing delivers the last 757 to China's Shanghai Industries.

The plane will be the 1,050th single-aisle, twin-engine 757 to be delivered since Boeing began shipments in 1982.

Experts say the 757 also was a victim of its own success. Many 757s flying today are less than 10 years old and don't need to be replaced. Airlines are expected to operate them for years with Boeing supplying parts and support.

The increased capabilities of Boeing's newest 737 and its future 7E7 will fill the market now served by the 757, Boeing officials say.

Boeing officials say the building could eventually be used for future parts production on Boeing's new jetliner, the 7E7.

What happens to all those workers.. Fired? move them around to other plants?

Also isn't the 757 considered the "Hot-Rod" of Boeing?

Why not move them to work on the 7E7 when production starts?

Plans are made months in advance, some will be used on the 7E7 program, some will be used on the 767 program. Some of the workers may be taking early retirement and there are other programs that the workers could be moved to, some may be let go, but the workers already know who they are, so no surprises.

My favorite is either the 747 or 737. I've never flown in a Boeing before. Only Airbus and MD. I guess I have flown Boeing then as Boeing bought MD.

I belive the 757 has the fastest acceleration and climb performance of the boeing planes but I may be wrong. Too lazy to find numbers right now I guess. I know its been said too many times, but that is the sexiest plane ever made.

Well, if we are speaking of a Sexy airplane, then that would be the Concorde, damn, that was one sexy beast!

Hey Iain, are you one of those Concorde lovers? They are having a Concorde get together in New York, sometime in Novermber.

Yeah I'd have to agree with you on that. I finally saw one in person at the new smithsonian aviation museum at the dulles airport.

Well (As long as the tri-jets don't hear this) I loved the 757, the only thing I didn't like about it was the 3 wide seating on both sides. But hey what a fast airplne. Anybody ever sit just behind the wings on T/O? What a ride!

Nope your exactly right...fastest acceleration and climb perfomance of an 2 engine jet.

Possibly any commercial jet flying.

Hense the term that it is affectionately called the 'hot rod".

As for mtsu I have never really been a 737 fan never hated em but they never really excited me much.

But that all changed with the new NG737 they definately excite me. I love the new wing and it looks great with the blended winglets.

It makes the "classics" look well dated. Tho I will say this the airframe is getting kinda dated and I think Boeing has done all that they can to give the plane extra life.

If Boeing isn't already doing so they need to think of the 737's sucessor.

Ona side note though the NG737's are kinda on my sh_t list cause there sucess hastened the end of production of the 757 line...but I'm learning to let go.

The 7E7 continues the tradition of Boeing creating sexy ass looking commerical jets.

I just hope that the 7E7 has the same climb/acceleration performance as the 757 if not better.

Boeing should come up with something like a 747NG.

It's great to see that Boeing changed their colors to the 7E7 scheme. I dislike the Airbus paint scheme a lot.

Since paint is the determining factor in how buyers choose which plane to buy or how well its made.

I agree though the new paint scheme looks nice.

Does 0-70 knots in 4.5 seconds sound farfetched. I asked my freind's grandpa who used to fly for United, though never flew the 757, said pilots that did said that a lightly loaded 757 could accelerate that fast. The new potiac GTO does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds. That would be like drag racing a semi and losing.

Yup, the concorde is a beauty. But stretch-8's with the big high bypass turbofan engines are pretty cool too!

Man, with the investment they put into the new wing, the winglets, the glass cockpit, etc. You are seeing the 737 for the next 15 or more years. My two dissapointments with the airplane: 1) they didn't clean up the cockpit windows, so it's still a noisy cockpit and 2) that cabin is narrow compared to the A-320. It was an economic decision as changing the cross section would have meant a whole new airplane, but dang, they are locked in now for a long time.

Well yea wasn't talking bout the successor of the 737 coming out in the next 5-10 or even 15 yrs. but I would think that Boeing should at least be open to the idea and figure that they have done all that they could do to keep the 737 program alive for the next untold amount of more years to come.

And start at least thinking about it's sucessor.

And by stretch 8's you mean the 737-800's?

I'ma bit of a size queen and prefer the 737-900's tho truly there is lil to no diff tween the planes cept for size.
