......especially these northwestern and southwestern US ARTCCs that have the big Center sectors and not a darn thing going on at night within them. Controllers are darn near friendly and conversational at these times of night. It was that way when I was flying cargo, and things sure haven't changed...... ZAB: Ghost 7, center, radar contact lost, recycle Mode 3 and say altitude. G7: G7, level 290, direct Chisum. ZAB: G7, roger, maintain FL290, report crossing Chisum. G7: G7 Level 290, will advise. ZAB: G7, picking up your Mode 3 intermittent....nah just lost it. G7: Rog, G7 crossing Chisum, you want me to advise crossing Socorro? ZAB: (sarcastically)..Yeah, that'd be nice, Ghost...seeing as how I can't paint a primary on you anyways.... G7: Oh,yeah........... |

Since they can't paint you anyway, why not just go flying with the radios off? Now that would really be sweet.

Mike, this may be the single most stupid question you've ever been asked, but when people talk about the stealth aircraft they always say that the plane shows a return no bigger then a bird. Now, why not reconfig the radar sites to look for birds that are moving AT 600 KNOTS!

It's just very difficult to pick out the return, since it'll look like almost any other "clutter" encountered with a radar. |

I thought the F-117 & B-2 had a small radar reflector they could extend to boost their RCS when that happened, guess I was mistaken. I read the book by the guy who ran "skunk works" and headed the development of the F-117. I recall reading that for the few seconds the bomb bay is open it has a RCS bigger than a 747. It also said the actual size of the aircraft was irrelevant, but the shape was criticall. In fact their proposal for the B-2 design was almost exactly the same shape as the F-117, just 3X the size. |
