Small planes still safe, aviation experts say
Four crashes in Texas have killed 13 people since Sunday
By ANGELA K. BROWN
Associated Press

FORT WORTH - Despite a rash of fatal general aviation crashes in Texas this week, small planes are still considered safe, industry officials say.

Thirteen people have died in four small-plane crashes in Texas since Sunday, and five Texans were killed when their single-engine plane crashed Monday in Missouri.

But the number and rate of crashes nationwide has decreased the past decade even as pilots of small planes are flying more hours each year, according to National Transportation Safety Board statistics.

"It is still a very safe method of transportation," Chris Dancy, spokesman for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, said Thursday.

"Statistically, it is unusual to have so many accidents in such a short period of time in such a relatively small geographical area," Dancy said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB continue investigating the recent Texas crashes, which involved different types of planes.

"We start looking at each accident as a unique event ... but if we find something broader, we will address it," said Lauren Peduzzi, an NTSB spokeswoman.

Officials say it's too early to tell if weather was a factor.

You think there's a lot of crashes, but what you fail to see is the number of planes that make it to their destinations safely.

I love the headline of that article . Yes, after 100 years, small planes are still as safe as they ever were (in fact I would say safer), despite a few Texans going down last week.

Airplanes, no matter how many engines, shouldn't be allowed to fly. Helicopters definitely shouldn't be allowed to fly. Hell, I have my doubts on whether birds should be allowed to fly. The only thing that should be allowed to fly are insects because they're too damn small to hurt anything that they hit (unless it's in your face at 100mph on a Harley V-Rod).

Oh yeah, I forgot one. Bass boats should be allowed to fly for very short instances, namely, as they jump the wake taking you from one killer honey hole to the next to pick up another trophy.

Being a libertarian, I believe that anything that can get space between it's butt and the ground should be allowed to fly. But I would entertain arguments against helicopters.
