Just introduced, the GPSMap 96 and 96C. Billed as replacements for the long-toothed GPS III Pilot, they basically took the GPSMap 76 form factor added a bunch of memory and a USB port, a complete Jeppesen database including obstructions/towers (but not terrain, as with the 296), and several aviation-oriented features from their pricier units (vertical navigation profiles, flight logging, etc), along with the HSI display I've been begging their engineers for since I bought my 76. The 96C has a color display and over 100MB of memory, which can be stuffed with MapSource CitySelect maps to get max local-level detail and autorouting driving directions. This form factor is durn-near perfect in a yoke mount, by the way. ![]() With the introduction of the GPSMap 296 earlier in the year, Garmin got rather draconian with its pricing policies so you won't find these units for sale for less than $699 and $469; Garmin has threatened dealers with loss of their dealership privileges if caught selling below Garmin's minimum sales price. http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap96/ http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap96c/ |

Man, can't believe you are so late on this one. Those were so two weeks ago Kidding. Just you seem to be up on what the current stuff is usually. If the price was just a bit better, there would be no reason for pilots to buy the marine based handheld units. Oh well. Good alternative to the 196 if a huge screen isn't needed. |

Apologies for reviving this thread, but I got to play with a Garmin 296 yesterday and all I gotta say is wow . I say again: WOW. That thing is nothing short of spectacular. Nice compact size, looks like it would fit a yoke well. Incredible color display. Pretty much everything a GPS had better be for that kinda dough. Now I just need to find myself a sugar momma to spring for one! |

Hello Aloft, Maybe you can contact Garmin to see if they have any demos or refurbished units on the cheap. Good Luck, JR |

[ QUOTE ] Don't you have some hot date coming up? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, and I think it'd be a one-time-only event if I showed up with a shopping list. |
