Today was my first formal day of work ever. I have had side jobs in the past (watching neighboors homes, watering lawns, watching pets...) but today was my first REAL day of work!! Why am I so excited...? Today I went to work at the airport! I am a Line Technician at an FBO. At first I applied a month ago, had an interview the next day, then was turned down. I was kind of down after that. So then I applied online for Skywest. I was turned down for that. I even went in an left my app. with a station manager; still no call back. Then on Friday on my way home from Disneyland, I got a call on my cell phone. It was the FBO manager wanting to know if I still wanted the job!!! So today I went in at 9am to start my training. Watched some videos, took some tests, and my first REAL day of work was over! I cant wait to get on to the hands-on stuff. Overall, I just want to say thanks for all of the valuable advice and encouraging coments. Everyone here has something to offer whether a pilot or non-pilot, and I thank everyone again. |

I believe that line tech's are also usually dual trained as fuel replacement specialists

[ QUOTE ] Congratulations! [sutpid question]What is a line technician do? [/stupid question] [/ QUOTE ] Situational awareness, Brian! ![]() Ok, so that doesn't really work here. ![]() Anyhow, your "line technician" can be found pulling airplanes in and out of hangars, fueling planes, washing them, and any number of other things at the airport. Don't be afraid to tip them either. |

Thanks everyone, and Kristie...the FBO that hired me requires a minimum age of 16. I guess thats in place to have a DL to drive the refulers or "Bertha" as it is called at my place. LOL! Iain...Its a new FBO that opened up here on the Central Coast of california. |

Congrats on getting the job. Is the FBO the place where you interviewed and was turned down, or is the place where you dropped off the application and waited for the phone call?

Congratulations. I parlayed a "line technician" job into an airline career. Do good work and network well and this will be a great start. Dave |

[ QUOTE ] is that something a 15 yr old could do for a job or do you have to be 16+? [/ QUOTE ] From what I have gathered, it all depends on the size of the fbo, the volume/type of traffic in and out, and the gm's attitude. The GM I was under at SMO wasn't too keen on hiring teens to handle multi-million dollar jets, catering to high-profile passengers, or just being exposed to highly combustible materials. But I did speak with some other GMs and they will take a chance. Considering all the feedback I was given, I wouldn't think GMs at smaller fbo's have the same mentality. |

Dave that is how I know a few corporate guys got started. That jet you fuel today maybe the one you fly in a few years. I know Mr Epps will give a guy a special look to fly his charters if they worked the line for him. I have been told he took a line guy with less time over a a few applicants because he knew his work ethic and personality. I met a guy up there also that told me when I get 200 multi to give him a call regardless of TT and he would see help me all he could with his contact. Networking is vital.

At least you are working instead of being like some teens and causing trouble and being lazy
