I had an "oriental" man come up to the cockpit of a 1900 after a flight once and say: "Ahhh, you a very good pirate. I tell my daughter she need to meet a pirate and you very good pirate." Kept us going all week. |

Really why does it matter your race or gender? What matters is your knowledge and how you perform in the cockpit. As a male, I really wouldn't mind seeing more females in the cockpit. Might even do us some good |

If you were in medicine, you would say you would like to see more in the hospital, if you were in the army, you would want to see more in the forces, if you had your head between your legs.............lets not go there |

On a flight with BA back from Moscow this year, there was a female FO, and half the cabin crew were men, one of them Asian ........ the service was great and the pilots were both REALLY cool ....... the point is it didn't phase me..... it's just part of modern day UK (and also US) that we have now generally reached a non-biased society (at least I hope so). It doesn't bother me, I see no reason why flight crews should not mirror the whole population which they serve. A person is a person and deserves respect. It might help you identify a person from a crowd, in just the same way as eye or hair colour.... but to me it is no more than that, I wouldn't even have said it was worth mentioning these days. That's the way it should be ![]() The only thing that really bothered me was when I had lectures at Uni from an Egyptian guy, who had such a strong accent, that it was almost impossible to work out what the **** he was saying!!! |

[ QUOTE ] It's "Asian" John! "Oriental" rug, "Asian" person. [/ QUOTE ] Having this argument in another thread. I disagree. Asian could be anyone from the continent of Asia - includes Russia, Iran, Iraq, etc. I do not even pretend to be politically correct. If you tell me someone is Oriental I know what you are talking about. It includes people from places like Southeast Asia, the Pacific Basin and even up to Hawaii in some cases. If you say Asian I will wonder if you mean Eastern Russia. |

I agree with what you're saying, John - it is technically correct. I've been schooled in this before (by somebody pretty close to me that's actually qualified to fill me in), and she said that it's akin to calling me "colored" in today's world. If compared to a "white" person, I am "colored". It's just not a very cool thing to do....

White people are actually "colored," as they posess more of the coloring melanin in the skin, right? I am pretty sure Negro derived from some African word or country - Niger or Nigeria maybe. I always felt the best description was "black." Of course now they are saying "African-American" which I find ridiculous. Not all black skinned people come from Africa (caribbean, India (part of "Asia"), South America, etc.) and certainly not all black people are American! This whole subject is ludicrous. Being "Politically Correct" is neither. In fact it's an oxymoron. Oriental still means Oriental. The Orient is the region that includes SE Asia and the Pacific basin. Not all Asians are Oriental by any means. To call Orientals Asian is not always going to be correct either. |

[ QUOTE ] I always felt the best description was "black." [/ QUOTE ] "Lloyd" always worked well for me, but we're not quite there yet as a nation... .So, john, do you think that a groupd of people might best be able to decide what they'd like to be called? If a group of people want to be called "Asian", but you think "Oriental" is appropriate, what should they be called? If, by using that logic, you still think that they should be called "oriental", then why should "negro" or "colored" be used? |

I'm white, and I don't care if someone calls me Cracker. I figured since I eat at Cracker Barrell (sic?). I also don't mind if someone calls me Honky, since I like to go to Honky Tonks on the weekends. This post was made in jest, I really don't eat at cracker Barrell. |

[ QUOTE ] So, john, do you think that a groupd of people might best be able to decide what they'd like to be called? [/ QUOTE ] No Lloyd I don't - first of all I'm philosophically opposed to "grouping" people. Second - what is grouping about? Race? Origin? Ethincity (is this different than race?) If you tell me you are Asian - then I will believe you are from the continent of Asia. If you tell me you are Oriental, than I would expect to see Oriental characteristics I suppose. I don't know. It's all messed up. I wish we were all green. |

[ QUOTE ] You have a very narrow life experience don't you? I feel sorry for you. [/ QUOTE ] Whatever, John. ![]() I've just got this crazy liberal hippy thought that people of a certain race ought to be called what they want to be called. It's called respect and courtesy. If you don't see it that way, fine. Anyway, back to the code. I wish we all would live that way. Not just pilots but everyone. The world would be a hell of a lot better if we did. |
