Default Command Upgrade Training

I was in Mildura, Vic., Australia yesterday and there was a Cathay Lear 45 (VH-CXJ) doing some circuits/missed. The guys pulled in for a bit giving myself and the guys I was flying with had chance to check out the plane and have a talk with the pilots. Apparently they were doing upgrade training to Capt from FO; both being on the 744. Personally I was always under the impression that upgrade training was always completed in a simulator of the same aircraft type (I'm sure they'll do this as well in addition to the Lear). Just wondering what other airlines do this sort of thing and what the pros are - compared to a sim?? I know it's real-life training but is it financially viable to train these guys to fly an aircraft so different to the 744? Your thoughts?
