Approach into FRG this morning - lined up for the ILS. Started down and just past 1500 ft I got rocked. Everything was shaking so much I couldn't read the instruments. Airpeed bounced back and forth by 40 knots each side. Heading varied by 45 degrees on either side. I couldn't push down hard enough to catch the glide slope. My head was smashing the window and the roof. Through 1000 I gave up and went missed. My heading variations managed to average out to keep the loc centered, but I had said goodbye to the GS and wasn't getting it back. Screw it. If the plane wasn't going to fall apart my back and head were. Four peices of bank work weren't worth it. Got into TEB okay. It wasn't fun, but it was nothing like over on Long Island. |

What is this word "missed" you speak of? I know how you feel. We've been having some rough stuff down here in the dirty, dirty south off and on the past couple of weeks. On another note-I literally had a headset broken in half and my scalp lacerated by an experience very similar to this. I went from dead calm air to 70 knot crosswind. New word boys and girls-Taku Winds. |

And the hit just kept coming. To all you instrument students: do you know why your CFI makes you do partial panel approaches to minimums? Because that stuff happens! Remember the mag compass you hardly ever notice? That bad boy was my best friend tonight on the way home. |

Oh....you mean the thing that I hang the fuzzy dice from? I never knew it had an alternate use. We need to cross paths one of these days Ian, I know you are around the CT area and I hear starcheckers all the time on BOS center when we are going to ALB and on NY center...well, I hear them everywhere.

Beat it into their heads. Everyone who trained me, from the Army, to my airplane instructors (who were all sub 1000 hour guys), to the Airnet instructors, made an event like tonight a non-event. To somebody who blew that stuff off - god help you getting a Baron to 100 ft below DH while partial panel. Instructors make the difference.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt comes to mind. Turn the Avidynes and G1000's off. I'll come to a M & G in the NE anytime.

There's an airnet run that comes into FRG? That's cool. Since I fly out of there and I was thinking about going to airnet, once I get about 1000 more hrs, lol. I heard they fly people to the interview on their planes. Is it only one of the baron runs though at FRG, would I have to drive to TEB if I wanted to fly to OH?

I'm sure you could probably find your way to LCK through FRG. It seems like one way or another, every airport we land at touches LCK. Like that game...about Kevin Bacon. -mini |
