So, I heard yesterday that my company changed its insurance mins. Now to upgrade a guy only needs 2000TT, and 1000 in type (1900C) which isn't insurmountable at all (I'd only need the summer). Apparently, the plan was to remove the requirement for an ATP to upgrade as well, but they clarified, and insurance is going to require an ATP to reduce the upgrade time. Dammit. I went from absolutely excited to once again dismayed. Back to the job search. Sorry to complain. |

Perhaps I am not understanding your situation completely. What is stopping you from getting an ATP?

Yeah, you should be able to do the ATP when you do your upgrade training. Type rides are the same as ATP.

I think the kids like 18 years old or something. hes worried about working as an FO untill hes 23. Seriously, ppragman, you should think about school. Go to college, find a flying job you can do around school schedule. i know youre driven to succeed, but youre gonna run into a glass cieling if you dont have a degree. Might as well do it now and get the college experience. Its better than doing some sort of online degree down the road when you need to get a better job. Trust me...

Not really any jobs I'm all that interested in that will work around a school schedule, I'd like to fly floats in the summer, and do something else in the winter, but up here in AK, not too many decent winter jobs, additionally, I don't have a CFI (which is my own damn fault, I really need to get that), and the CFI-ing is slim pickens up here in the white months anyway. I did a year and a half of college before I started flying full time, did not really care for it actually. I've got about 90 credits, so I don't have to UVSC for much longer. Really all I want is a decent schedule with decent pay so I can have a good QOL for the next 3 years or so. I hear from a lot of guys that I'm missing out on my college experience, don't worry, I had it during my first year and a half, and to be honest, it wasn't really that fun. Stressing all the time, gaining weight, no way to really relax, working and going to school. It was brutal, even though I fly over 100hrs/month at my current job, its still way more comfortable than going to school and working retail part time. And yeah, there's something to be said for a challenge, don't get me wrong, but honestly, I just want to get on someplace where I can stay for the next 3 years comfortably, without having to put myself back in pay or QOL. | |

Needs comment of the day award. Dude you are to young to be stressing way to much. You have accomplished a lot for your age. You are going to have to go single pilot freight for a couple years if you want the pic with out an ATP. Then at 23 move to something that you can be CA on. I's say airnet probably would be a good choice for you because you could be PIC in the single pilot stuff and then have 3 years seniority under your belt when you can have an ATP. You doing good, you just can't stress over stuff you can't control.

I recommend going to a party school. There, I discovered my love of boneless barbecue wings, draft beer, lots of fun people, and Papa John's; oh yeah and a degree. I'm not kidding, college and partying are an appropriate step.

| Senior Member | I'm advising my sons to pick their University based on Maxim/Playboy poll's and the size of their football stadium...I mean a degree's a degree right? hehe.

| Also tell them that (unless it's a big name university) your degree gets you your first job and your first job gets you your next job. After five years, only HR cares where your degree is from.

| Maxim and Playboy can't steer you wrong. The size of a football stadium is usually an excellent parameter. It could put you somewhere in the SEC (good ribs and nice girls), or up in the mid-west where I'm from (where football is important, but not as important as that next round of shots because your teams can't hold up to the Gators when it counts).

| I think his age is the problem. Only 19 now, need to be 23 (?) to get the ATP.

I just finished my degree and if I wasn't leaving for flight school I don't think I'd be able to leave! I loved it, I swam for 3 years, and just worked during the summers, lots of great friends, couple great girls, and lots of great memories I can't remember, wouldn't change a thing.
