Default Martinaire 'Van flyby...

So while I'm waiting on the mechanic to replace a window latch that my CFI broke on the plane yesterday (which was pretty damned funny) I hear this roar - and I look up.

There's a Martinaire Caravan going...well...really fast...about 5-10 feet off the runway at TKI.

Just wondered if it was one of y'all....USMCMech? Was that you?

Are you studying for english class, and using oxymorons?

You just used the word 'Caravan' and the words 'really fast' in the same sentence!!!

Nope. It was at TKI, there were no RVs around, and it was a low pass straight down the runway.

I know Martinaire uses TKI for a lot of their initial training. When I was in ADS last summer, we flew approaches there almost every single day we flew. I know when I had my checkride, we did a tight pattern back in after our last missed approach, a "fly it like you stole it moment" if you will...could have been one of those... Feels good sometimes to be able to have a little fun in the airplane you fly for a living.

Caravan + really fast = about 170 kts...name another fixed gear, single engine airplane with struts that can do that to a 1/4 mile final and still make the first turnoff.

I wonder if that new Kodiak could do that...

Yeah, I know, but I didn't want the overspeed warning going off the entire time, so let's comprimise and make it 174

On a side note, I had a Caravan one time that the overspeed would go off somwhere between 165 and 170...talk about throwing you for a loop when it just suddenly goes off when you are not expecting it...

You mean that airplane that is just copy of the Caravan by a different company with different name...

I would think, considering that it looks like Quest "copied" the design of the Caravan, it should. Its advertised landing distance is 750 ft (w/o reverse) and I if I remember, the Caravan is around 900 to 950. Then again, the Kodiak is a STOL aircraft...

Wasn't me.

It was a checkride for one of our part time, contract pilots. The CP was probably having a little fun.

I'm amazed at how fast, and how slow this plane can be. 170 to a mile final, followed by a 1000 ft landing roll is easilly done.

Did you chase trains during your training?

Do the part-timers need to have time in type before becoming part time?

I don't know.

My understanding is that part-time/contract pilots are hired on a case by case basis. You would have to talk to the CP directly.
