Just about everyone in OAK got ramped by the FAA last week. I've never been checked on by TSA before. What did they do and ask about?

Out of know where like black helo's apprearing TSA agents arrive on the ramp. It was an ID check on everyone. The entire UPS ramp came to a halt and everyone was just standing. Not bad at all but you never know with these guys..

Really, couldn't they have arrived in a van? Probably would have saved some money.

Speaking of, I just read in this article that your average TSA screener makes about 7k more per year than I do. If only I could half ass it as much as some of them do!

We got ramped by the TSA the other day. Dude asked me for my badge, I asked for his-he fumbled around and got it out, I wrote down the info, said thanks and we started talking and then he just went away....

I got ramped the other day by the FAA- it was pretty painless.

Funny thing was though, he looked at my medical and asked how long it was good for. I asked "is this a quiz?" He said no - he didn't remember - 6 months, right? I told him he was right. Then he said, wait, this is expired then! So I explained that that I was utilizing the class 2 privileges on it. He looked confused, and just handed it back.

I really think that some of those guys have no freakin clue. The other day one asked to see my Hazmat material. I showed him the company pilot notification form booklet and the emergency response booklet. I don't know if he really knew what he was looking at though.

We had an inspector ride up front with us a few months ago. It was pretty painless except when my coffee spilled on her feet....

Gotta love how the government can just show up and end an operation.

What a joke.

The inspector who ramped me was super nice, though. He showed up when I landed for the day, and he patiently waited until I unloaded all my work, did the paperwork, and buttoned up the plane.

By rule a ramp check can not affect a deadline.

And you can't bump cargo or people to get an inspector on board. And if you don't have enough O2? Too bad, fed ain't coming with you.

I take it this is something that the company who actually holds the deadline would have to enforce?

I know you 135 guys have balls, tough as steel, but what about your middle level managers that babysit the loaders, etc? Do they stand up to the authorities when a deadline is close? Or are they just push overs?

Oh heck yeah. Time is money and that includes holding a flight for a ramp check. Usually the first question that comes out of the inspectors' mouths is "We're not holding you up are we?"

The answer to that question is "Yes I'm 10 minutes late."

I could understand that attitude and answer at an out station, but for example. . .

Out of Columbus during a heavy Airnet push?

Maybe I don't give these guys much credit, but I just don't trust any of them one inch. Give them an inch, they'll take a foot.

They come around Columbus during our meet. They will usually ask if we are on a tight deadline. Columbus provides for a little more time actually. Most planes are there for around 30 mins. We however are 3rd from last plane in and second plane out, so if things are going smooth we are in Columbus in the neighborhood of 12-15 minutes. Still enough time to check our certificates but they ain't gonna even try to open the aircraft log.
I once was going to get ramped in Peoria, IL. I'm usually there for 5mins max. This day strong winds and a hail storm made me late. So the guy meets me as I'm getting out of the Baron, and says he's from the FAA. I said hi I'm from Boca Raton, FL and if he'd like to talk he could run next to me as I go grab the work. He decided it'd be best he just watch.

Also there is very little babysitting in Columbus. It's actually a pretty impressive meet. If a ramper isn't running it's because their cart is filled with over 700lbs of work and they can't physically do it.

The rampers at TEB could take a lesson...

I have dealt with FAA investigators on the line. Without exception they've been professional, easy-going and simple to work with. Really normal guys just trying to do their jobs and not trying to bust your balls.

Never met the TSA on the ramp, but I go to BWI now and I hear they lerk around there a bit.

Yeah, I recall seeing a video of your rampers running with the bins.

No delay indeed.

I was absolutely impressed. I was late because of a late courier going in to LCK the other night. On the way in I had to plan for max load (900lbs). They had me completely fueled, unloaded and loaded with a weight slip in hand as I was coming back outside from the hazmat table. I was on the ramp maybe 3 minutes. Very impressive.

At the meet later I was there maybe 35 minutes...
