ATC: "Sir how's the ride?"

*all hell is breaking loose*

Lloyd: "Ahh......occasional light to moderate sir"

ATC: "Alright sir you can hold north of XXXXX intersection as published, 1 minute turns and an EFC of 10 minutes break United 209 we're gonna have you divert around an area of intense precip, a 210 just reported continous severe turbulance..."

A funny story about that turn (wasn't funny then . . . ).

So, the controller and I were working to get through the areas that were showing moderate and less, as the storms were still developing and were very organized at the time. However, you know how center radar can be. Well, the gap at my 11-1 o'clock started closing VERY quickly, and I decided that I'd had enough. I advised the controller that I was heading east, and he approved it. I was eager to geet on the ground and wait this one out - it was getting nastier than anticipated. Well, halfway through the turn, the controller was coordinating with BNA TRACON for a handoff, and the BNA controller basically told him that that was a bad idea, and that his (more accurate) radar was painting an area of extreme precip to the east and less than 5 miles. It's amazing how quickly this stuff built - I had just been through there!

Well, we figured out that there was a pretty light area - relatively speaking - toward the southwest, so that's where I went.

Let me tell you, I had a nasty ride for the rest of the way into MKL, and then into MEM. At one point I was indicating 130, gear down, prop forward and still getting beat to death.

Oh, the things you learn on a daily basis . . .

Oh, man - that would have made all the difference in the world!

Do you know what my biggest worry was? That my PTT would break and I'd have to use the hand mike! I'd have declared an emergency and landed on I-40 then.

No, we don't have them, although they would really come in handy sometime!

The 210 was fast, but it slowed down very quickly - pull the power and the speed comes with it. If you really wanna slow down quickly, just throw the prop forward.

This thing likes to go fast!

I was doing 350 knots on the ground in a King Air the other day at FL230.

I wish I had been in a 99 slogging it out 12,000' lower.

I'm not going to fit in well at the airlines.

I hit 410 knot ground speed February 27th, 2006 in the Beech 1900 over PA.

That reminds of a flight I did a month ago from CLT to FTY in a Piper Cherokee. My groundspeed was 70 knots on the way down and 180 knots on the way back. 3 hours and 10 minutes to get there, and 1 hour and 20 minutes to get back while battling thunderstorms on both legs. Crazy!!!
