Default AMF Training

I was just hired by Ameriflight. Thanks to everyone for answering all my questions in previous forums. I start training on Feb. 5 in Burbank and wanted to see if anyone could offer some insight on what to expect. I will be flying in from New Orleans so I won't have a car. Is it normally tough to get by or are there normally people to get rides from for food. Also, is flight training normally done there or will it be done at my base. I will be based in Jackson flying a PA-31. Thanks for all the info, I can't wait to get started.

Jeane will pair you up with somebody that has a car, so don't worry about it.

You'll most likely do your training here in Burbank.

Congratulations on getting on Ameriflight. It doesn't look like you did too much instructing so what did you do to build up your times, if you don't mind me asking?

Get the flows down cold!!!! Indoc its easy, take notes. Lots. There is a test at the end of the week (open book). Thats not to hard. Just take lots of notes. When they talk about haz just try to take it all in. Theres alot to know about it. Im not sure how UPS does the haz paper work, but if its anything like DHL its easy. I guess youll be flying the UPS run out there in MS right? My guess is they will try to put a better PA31 down there for you, probley a Cheif. I think there are 2 in the fleet with radar. I would hope you get one of them. Just get them flows down and youll be fine. If you have anyother questions let me know

I worked for a FAR 135 company that hired VFR pilots at 500 hours. We flew checks for Chase and Regions banks and did unscheduled on demand passenger flights.

Congrats and welcome aboard. Good for you on getting the Jackson run. The cost of living there will be well worth it. I'm from the area and I thought really hard about taking that. The six month lease I have here pretty much made my mind up.

I'm not sure if you're going to be flying out of Jackson or out of Natchez. You could get a real nice place right outside Jackson-Evers airport. If you haven't started searching for apartments yet, check out the ones on Lakeland drive. They look pretty nice. I might TDY there while you're in training just to check it out and use it as a miny vacation.

BTW. I think you might have done a sim session with my buddy in Hammond!

If your friend is Lamar, then yes I did a sim session with him. I need to call and tell him that it paid off. I had only flown a sim a couple of times and he did a good job of knocking the rust off. Thanks for the info on the apartments. I have looked on apartments.com and found some that look pretty nice but I need to check out the neighborhoods. What does TDY mean? I saw you and jtrain put TDY in your post but I don't know what that means.

Yep thats him!

TDY stands for temporary duty. Its when I'm sent to another base other than my own to fly anywhere from a week up to a month. I like because it keeps the flying interesting.

TDY pay is an extra $35 a day. If you can manage system TDY you make some decent bank out there.

I'm based out of BUR. Like Jtrain said, you get $35 a day per diem. The pay is slightly better, but you still have to eat and thats why you have the per diem. With that being said, I'm to cheap to spend $35 a day on food. So I do make a little extra.

I really like the variety of flying that I get out the TDY. I'm not on a continous TDY though.

Do you guys have pilots that commute? I have seen some posts on the "other board" that lead me to believe that some people commute? I am just curious....It is not very realistic since 90% of your flying is out west. Ahhhh, I miss flying freight like crazy!!!

Ahh Nice There are no freight operators in RIC other than Epps and my former employer Ram Air Freight. I very well might consider AMF if it was possible to commute!!!

A question about ameriflight, do you guys have any runs with 6 - 8 legs per night? The reason I ask is that it seems like most of the people I talk to say that you just fly somewhere, sit around for a really long time and then fly back home.

We don't have much night operations period. Most of the stuff is early AM departure for 1-4 legs, then a layover at the outstation hotel and a PM departure back to the main base.

There are some night flights out of BFI, OAK and BUR, generally in Metros or Lears to support bank/blood work.

CVG is mostly Metro AdHoc's with one Brasilia scheduled run for DHL and maybe another Brasilia AdHoc.

I got stuck with a rough one for the next two weeks up here in BFI. I'm just getting back to the hotel. I left at six yesterday afternoon. I had to fly BFI PDX BFI PDX with 1/2 an hour to two hour intervals in between. Fun.

The closest thing to RIC would be a DHL run out of CHO. Mon night through sat morning. E120
