Default Question for you AMFers

How senior is the SLC base? and how long would it take to get based there? Thanks for any help.

Not super senior, but it's all turbine. So if you don't have enough time and/or they don't need to hire someone off the street for it, you'll have to go to another base and fly the PA31 for 6 months or so.

Default in agreement...

Yeah, go fly somewhere else for a while (unless you have enough turbine time) in a chieftain and bid SLC. I hear it's been anywhere from 4 to 8 months. It's a good base.

Thanks for the info. Now for a few more questions. What bases are open for new hires? I would prefer phoenix or portland are they hard to get? And most imortantly do you have jumpseat priveleges if I was to stay in Utah and commute?

hiring into BUR, OAK, and PDX. Portland wouldnt be commutable. But if there is a flight available you could probably fly southwest home to utah on the weekends.

This is what I do from BFI. I live in Spokane and "commute" to work during the week. There are so many Horizon and Southwest flights to choose from everyday that it's really not too bad. Also, Spokane is close enough to BFI that if for some reason I couldn't get on a flight (spring break, christmas, any holiday I could drive the 4.5 hours. Many people do this. Just don't miss work due to getting bumped off your last option to get to work.

Thanks again for the input. I wouldn't mind commuting to Utah on the weekends for 6 months or so till I could get based in SLC. Just pondering my options. Alaska is COLD!!!

Is PDX still pretty senior? Fairly long upgrade time there?

My roommate just got a 99 line and has been here for a little over a year, but a few people higher up left all around the same time, so he got somewhat lucky. There are a couple of people who've been here less than a year headed for 99 training soon, but they'll be reserves probably for quite a long time. There are a couple 99 outstations here that go junior, because they're crappy in every way.

The 99 runs mostly SUCK in Portland. Unless you're from this area and have to stay or want to stay and don't care about career advancement, they're probably not worth waiting for. There are few great PA31 runs though.

It's a senior base mostly because AMF bought out another PDX-based company called Sports Air awhile back and a lot of the guys stayed.

So whats the next step for someone at AMF? Are they getting on with the few majors hiring? Or is the lack of CRM stoping there progress?

Thanks, EatSleepFly. Good info.

I understand they also hire into Oakland for the PA-31. That's only a couple hours away from where I'm working now. Do you know anything about it? (In terms of senority, advancement, routes) Thanks again!

From the little I know... many fractionals, cathay pacific, southwest, alaska, CAL...

I know that 6 mo at a regional increases chances with the big guys greatly(CRM/Glass Cockpit).

It seems like you gotta be either very motivated, know a lot of people or be just plain lucky. I havn't figured it out yet. But AMF'ers are moving on, believe it or not.

Probably a job site just reposting an old ad. I asked my buddy down there and he says he thinks they are pretty well staffed for 99 drivers. Besides, I happen to know there are some standing bids that would have to be awarded prior to anyone being hired off the street.

from what my buddies in oakland tell me.

-about 6-8 months currently for a 99 upgrade (but for amf this could drop to a 1 month overnight)

-and tons of IFR. you'll get real good flying out of oak.

from what i know.

-probably the most junior AMF base. eternally always hiring.

No outstation in Wenatchee, but there is a bank flight out of PDX that lays over there for about 8 hours.

How long to upgrade into the Bro or the 99 out of DFW? And how long to go from the right seat of the EMB to the left?

Just out of curiousity, which planes in the fleet are single pilot IFR? BE99? Metro? B1900? And also, does oakland offer any flight instructor / trainer jobs? I know there are none available now, but does the position exist up in oakland? Thanks guys.

All of the above, plus the PA31 of course.

As far as I know, the position doesn't exist in Oakland. They are crazy short of OAK PA31 line pilots though.
