Pansy stuff.

Now THESE are freight dog videoes:

http://www.flightlevel350.com/viewer.php?id=4142

http://www.flightlevel350.com/viewer.php?id=4171

http://www.flightlevel350.com/viewer.php?id=4174

This should be required viewing before embarking downt that path ! If you look closely in the first video you can see an ACC's SD-3 on the ramp, just as he's being pulled out of the hanger.

Some cool videos. Now I'm curious about "freight flying". Are there companies that hire pilots to transport cargo for customers, or how does that work? What are the usual requirements for such a position? I would greatly appreciate some insight on something I know little about. Thanks!

No, I had interviewed back in June and was put in a pool, but hadn't gotten a call for a class date for over 2 months so I started to apply other places, and ended up going to another company (not freight). ACC called me my second day of indoc, though. Funny how that works...

Their bases are moving west, and I wanted to move east, so I suppose it was for the best. Great company though, from the limited exposure I had.

If you fly as PIC under IFR, which most of them operate under, you must have the 135.243(c) mins -

1200 TT
500 xcty (not 50 NM, but airport to airport cross country is ok to be counted here)
100 night
75 instrument, 50 of it in flight (could be hood or actual)

I think that's it. It's a lot higher than some/most regionals these days - but normally they don't require very much multi, typically around 30-50 hours at max for the lower-tier cargo guys.

There are companies out there that will hire VFR only 135 pilots, with less requirements (see Part 135 in the FAR, it's around 135.243) but those are few and far between. Some places hire SIC's required by the aircraft operating certificate with low time, an example would be Air Cargo Carriers.

Thanks for the reply wheelsup.

Are there many jets doing freight flying? Or an appropriate question would be, what kind of planes are popular for freight flying?

great videos! thanks for posting.

for some sick reason that appeals to me
though we've lost 2 freight MU-2's here recently, hopefully the commander is a little more forgiving?

jts,

There are quite a few jets used. We have Lear 35's, and I know quite a few companies use Lears. It all depends on the company. I've heard of everything from the smallest jets to Fed Ex/UPS using the big boys (Boeing and Douglas aircraft) and everything in between.

wheelsup - I think you forgot some of the 135 mins....
Apparently it has to be night, incredibly cold, and raining / snowing to fly freight!

I didn't hire a CFI at the flight school because he did their SIC program.

Would you have otherwise hired the person? (assuming they had not done the SIC deal?)
