That's a good question. It's all preference. I decided to fly freight because I was given the opportunity to work "close" to home and better my single pilot ifr skills. Upgrade to turbine equipment was only 6 to 8 months (turned out to be about 3) and the turbine pic is golden time. If I would have went to a regional, it most likely would have taken longer to get that pic time building (but who knows, maybe not?). The regionals are much more "glamorous" but I wasn't worried about that. A lot of people go freight to get their time, and then go to regionals (or if enough time, majors/fractionals etc.) Pay is similar for the first couple years, I'm actually getting paid more right now than I would at most regionals. As far as mins.. regionals will hire at 1000TT and 100ME usually. Freight requires 1200TT (part 135 min) and anywhere from 50 to 200ME. I can't tell you from experience about schedules at the regionals but you can find it all over this and flightinfo's board. Freight is typically 5 days a week. I wouldn't have done it any other way (at this point). I'm loving it and it is the last opportunity for me to fly single pilot. But once again it's all preference. What are your goals? Where do you want to be in 5 years? ....got to ask yourself a few questions before choosing a path, then roll with the punches, nothing will workout exactly as planed, just keep a good attitude and things will workout in your career. |

A B99 pulled into the ramp next to my 767 in GEG yesterday. I excitedly ran over to see if it was you. The pilot explained to me that he worked for Airpac, not Amflight, kinda like it said on the side of the plane....Airpac. He was an older guy, said he knew you from somewhere, though. I felt kinda dumb thinking that all B99's around must be Amflight. Flying freight is great. Especially when you look at what it takes for a pilot to just get up and take a leak in passenger planes these days. I thank Gawd I'm a freight pilot every time I see that. |

That must have been the cheif pilot for airpac...I talked to him quite abit prior to AMF. They have the run we've wanted! Starting this monday, our metro will take it over! I've been in Moses Lake and Walla Walla the past few weeks.

I could envision myself going into a regional, and have even interviewed at one very rcently. However, I have really enjoyed my 1 1/2 years dogging around California. It wasnt always easy or fun, but would never trade the experience. I agree, it might be my one and only single pilot job. I have learned lots about flying in this time, but none so much as what I have learned about myself! I would recommend the experience to anyone.

"I have learned lots about flying in this time, but none so much as what I have learned about myself! I would recommend the experience to anyone" This is what the PFTers, the direct entry guys, and the folks that want to be an airline pilot NOW, are missing out on. Good luck my friend. |

I might know a Jesse, I'd probably know the face and not the name...it's hard to know many people outside of your base. I think the only way i'd know him is if he was in the training dept. in BUR. We have well over 200 pilots now, and growing.
