Sent Doug a PM then realized we have a whole forum for this stuff. I tried to change my email address from it's present to a yahoo.com address. Problem being with the anti-spam/troll thing not letting web based emails. Any way to change my email?

If you go into the User CP (Control Panel), there is a menu called "Edit Email & Password", it's about the second option in Settings and Options (it is right below where you click to change your sig and above the link where you click to change your avatar)

Right. And when you do that, trying to change it to an @yahoo.com address, it comes back with an error message. Hence, the problem.

I think Doug blocked free web-based accounts so random people can't sign up and post pointless stuff, profanity, spam etc. If you use a non-web based account, it's harder to falsify information because you are probably paying for the account...I Think.

I was able to use a Gmail account, but I think it may be a different kind of set up.

Here's the scoop, this is going to be long-winded so bear with me.

Initially, I blocked web-based email accounts because about 100% of the "two post wonders" that show up to flame/troll the forums sign up with a yahoo/hotmail/gmail account. People are far less apt to do this with an @cox.net email address. Weird, but it's human nature.

I "quietly" took off the ban on a trial basis and found that since we actually have more moderators and other users that care about the site and report posts, that it's not a problem.

Up until last week. A few hundred vBulletin installations were being hacked by a group using webmail accounts that would manipulate a security flaw within the software and hack the entire server. A quick remedy in the vBulletin community was to plug that security hole temporarily until everyone was able to determine where exactly it was.

Web email registrations will be back shortly if all goes well even though I'm not a fan of it, but it's what the users want. Please be patient.
