| Old Skool | So I bought a DELL XPS media computer in April. But finally put it together a week ago due to not having a desk to place it on. Anyways. For the last 3-4 days the computer has been freezing randomly when online. When it freezes the curser is able to move about freely. On links when frozen it remains an arrow and doesn't turn into a pointing hand. As stated it freezes for 3-5 minutes randomly then resumes SOP. I did a virus scan and it came up with nothing, the computer is clean. Dell tech support I hear is in India or Pakistan so ummmm no thanks. So I decided to ask the JC computer geeks for suggestions. Help...please!!! |

| After sitting for a while maybe it just needed for a while to run to get the bugs out

| Sounds like the hard drive may be dieing. My laptop just took it in the rear like a NYC pretty boy. The hard drive was failing and I would get these long periods of HDD loading, then eventually a BSOD and a reboot to the "No OS found" error message. But this did this constantly, not just when loading web pages. What kind of connection are you using for the internet (USB to modem, LAN to modem, wireless, etc)?

| Old Skool | Couple of suggestions. Check to make sure you have the latest drivers for your video and sound card, as well as the motherboard. Since you have a Dell, their website SHOULD have them. If not, call tech support. Open up your device manager and make sure there are no conflicting devices. If so, call tech support and let them help you sort it out. Lastly, try running Firefox as your web browser. www.mozilla.com/firefox Did your computer come with the Windows XP already installed, or did you have to put it on there yourself. If its the latter case, its always a good idea to "burn in" the system for a day or so before installing any additional programs. |

| It may be a lemon. I bought a Dell desktop for my wife a few months ago. It worked fine for about a week, then starting having all kinds of issues. We called Dell support, yep it's overseas, and they had a local tech come out and replace our power supply one week. That didn't fix it. Had another tech come out and replace the mother board. That didn't fix it. Had another tech come out and replace the hard drive. That didn't fix it. To this day I have no idea what was causing the issues, but long story short, we complained enough and had a brand new computer shipped out to us. We haven't had any problems with the new one, go figure. I usally build my own computers, but figured this time around it would be "quicker and easier" to just order a Dell. Never again. I'll go back to building them myself next time (of course you can't build laptops). I was like you though, I put off calling tech support until we had no other options. I also couldn't fix it myself because it was under warranty and any parts I put in it would've void that. So basically you have to go through their system. I used to be a big fan of Dell, but have noticed a pretty big decline in the quality of their machines in recent years. Too much outsourcing in my opinion. Anyways, enough rambling. I recommend giving Dell a call and having them fix it before your warranty expires.

| I guess I am lucky though I have 2 Dells, a desktop and laptop and the only issue with either one was with the desktop the cd/burner did work fully when I got it. I got in touch with Pakistan and after 1 hour of trying junk the guy goes "I guess you need a new cd drive" I said well I told you that an hour ago and they sent a tech out here to change. Overall though I cant complain
