Default What do you think about FSA?

I'm thinking about leaving ERAU and going to Flight Safety Academy to do the CIME and then the "Instructor Track" (more hours=more opportunities). If I go to FSA, I'll probably do an online degree. I know I'll leave ERAU but should I go to FSA or to another university like the University of North Dakota? Is FSA worth an online degree? By the way, what does FSA do when the hurricanes come rolling through?

When hurricanes come rolling in they move there planes north.

Online degree vs University, personally i wouldn't recommend an online degree. I prefer a class room setting. I did my degree first before going to FSA. Wanted to have a base just in case something happens and i couldn't fly. What is you reason for leaving ERAU ? That will help me a little bit more if i should suggest FSA>

I don't know, I just lovr it here at ERAU.....For some reason, I see my chances of becoming a pilot go up if I stay here......I want to focus more on my flying too. Probably doesn't make any sense, but I just don't like it here...

Then if you love it at ERAU i would suggests just to stay there. Get your degree and do the the flight training simultaneously. To leave DAB and go somewhere else I would think is a waste of time.

My bad! My last post had an EXTREME typo, I DON'T like it here in PRC (what just happened is an example of Riddle, and probably other college, roommates). The price doesn't seem to match the quality here......

Best thing to do is to take a tour of the school you are interetsed in, thats what i did when i was looking for a school. Then make your decision from there.

Whats PRC?

Here's my opinion - (and sorry, can't answer about FSA because I've never been there - only know they cost mega $$$)

Goto a regular college.

While in college, fly at a local FBO.

Get your CFI in two years, then instruct for two years.

Finish all in 4 years, have at least 1000/100 of good flight experience, a real college experience and degree, and all for a fraction of the cost.

Cons - Pricey, Stage Check wait times can be almost a week at times, and people have too much money and remind me I am poor. sigh...
Florida environment for training, no Mountains, no ice, nothing really hard to deal with.

pros - Good planes (pa 44's.. warriors could be newer but work fine!)
Good MX department
Good training
You will be able to fly 99% of the time. In 7 months here I had maybe 2 lessons altered due to weather issues.

I've seriously made alot of good friends here.

Bottom line, I enjoy it, my checkbook does not.

The main problem with attending an ERAU campus rather than using their extended campus is that at the end of four years you only have 250 hours, your CFI, and of course your degree. Depending on your age, 250 hours may or may not be OK for four years of flight training. I chose FSA because I knew I could get through the ratings to MEI in 9-12 months and start building time/experience.

When I went to FSA I had two years of college completed. While at FSA I took classes with Riddle at the extended campuses and at Flight Safety Academy. I am not sure if Riddle still holds classes at FSA or not. The online classes just don't do it for most people. You can drive north to Patrick AFB and take Riddle classes there while instructing at FSA.

It all depends on how driven you are as an individual and whether or not you can handle instructing and college at the same time. Some simply cannot do it.

Good Luck...

Very well said! I am pretty much doing what was described above by chinookdriver. I actually am graduating college in less than 6 weeks now with a non-aviation related degree to fall back on. I have already started flight training and should have been training all through college...oh well. I should have my PPL by the time I graduate, then I am going to hit flying full time at my local FBO. At my training rate, if I work hard I should be instructing by potentially September of 07. If the mins at regionals stay low I may be able to get a job somewhere by this time next year April of 08'. If my plan works out I will be 22-23 have a job at a regional already, and have a 4 year degree. Oh yeah not to mention I will have spent a lot of money, but not as much as you will at Flight Safety Academy.

I have come down to it in my head...

I needed a place like FSA where I could train full time and be SURROUNDED by people 24/7 who talk about aviation.

I wasn't able to do the part 61 route though... I tried, but I didn't have the disipline to study everything on my own at the time. Granted it was 6 years ago I tried that, but still, I am a person that needs to be somewhat guided... or deadlined. Eitherway, I can't JUSTIFY spending the amount of money FSA demands... but on the other hand, I needed the structure.

To each their own.

It's always a good idea to be surrounded by people that share your interest and being able to work as a team on ground school topics.
Does anyone know anything about Jet University?

Yeah JET U is not a favorite here, there are a lot of posts about it on the forums, actually try looking at the general discussions, i think there was a main forum, but if not, look around, and after a while you'll definitely have a good idea about Jet U. Good luck,

Go to UND or Western Michigan. Southern Illinois and Purdue are also excellent schools. DO NOT go to FSA. WAY to expensive for what you get out of it. Focus on college first, perhaps working on your ratings at a local FBO. I've spoken to hundreds of pilots and it DOES NOT matter where you get your ratings. FSA is SO OVERATED its not funny. If you have your mind made up to get your ratings before a degree then check out Paris Air Inc. @ the Vero Beach airport...EXCELLENT school . Whatever you wind up doing, make sure your heart lines up w/your mind. Best to ya

Why not finish your degree at an Embry Riddle Worldwide campus while finishing your flight training? They have a campus in Melbourne FL which is only about a 40 min drive from Vero. The classes there are accelerated so you can finish in half the time. The only downfall is that it's about 630 dollars per class.

I checked out Flight Saftey the other day and was impressed but they have alot of useless things that are a waste of the students money. When I left they gave me a gift bag full of calculators, keychains and stuff. To me, I would rather fly at a place without all the fancy stuff.

But seriously its a very nice setup over there, but waaay to much foofy stuff that is a waste of my hard earned money.
