Default Question for FSA CFI's in the know...

Hey guys,

Since my path at FSA will inevitably take me down the CFI path, I have a few questions for those of you who would know:

1. What is the "hiring" criteria? I'm interested in going to a jet center after instructing for FSA, and I've heard different things. As I understand it, they will give you three options upon conclusion of your training:

A. The option of instructing at FSA and/or the jet center
B. The option of going to the jet center.
C. No offer for either instructing at FSA or the jet center

Can you please tell me what instructing at FSA and /or the jet center is based on? A guy here who just did his CFI checkride today said that you have to score higher than 83 on both oral and the flight; can that be confirmed?

The reason this is of such concern to me, is what if you have a bad day, and you score less than 83 percent on the flight, but you score high on the oral? What about the reverse? I think I can guess at what happens if you score low on both (option "C" lol). Do they take anything else into account?

I tend to choke (push PTS) on at least one portion of my checkrides and do great on my oral; that's just been par for course with me, and I don't know how to get around it. I already know in advance that lazy 8's are going to be my achilles heal. It's hard enough doing them from the left seat, and in CFI I have to do them from the right :P

Anyways, thanks in advance for helping me to understand how this works.

How do you get a score on your checkride? Isn't it pass/fail?

No. FSA scores the 141 students on their oral exam and the flight. Scores range from 70-100, 70 being just passing and 100 being flawless (most people will score in the 80-90 range if they did a good job). Obviously if you get below 70 on either oral or the ride, your going to need to redo the oral or the ride.

when you complete your CFI training they will give you a packet that will answer all of your questions of the hiring criteria. They have a set formula they will use to score you, that and only that will be what they judge you on (no letters of rec or anything will affect it)
If i can remember correctly, there were three parts they judge you on for the cfi position, your cfi checkride scores, the interview with skov and wakefield, and your presentation, the latter of which has the most importance. You also will have to do a "sim" ride in the frasca. After you get to one of the jet centers you wont think of the frasca as a "sim" anymore trust me. They will just watch you fly a few approaches, and a hold to make sure you know how to fly ifr, pretty simple really as long as you prepare.
And yes to answer your quesions, there are a few possible outcomes from your interview, your cfi job is not judged on the basis of your sim ride, and the internship position is not judged based on the outcome of anything else but your "sim" ride. The whole process is really not as big of a deal as everyone made it out to be, just relax, prepare and you'll do fine.
good luck hope that helps, and i highly recommend the jet center internship, will put you way ahead of your peers.

I can't resist...

Criteria is the plural form of criterion... As such, the question should be: "What are the hiring criteria."

BTW, to be super technical, "minimums" is not a word. Minima is the plural of minimum. (As in: What are the hiring minima?")

Unfortunately, the English language has accepted "minimums" as common use. Luckily, criterions never caught on.

But I digress...
