Dispatch currency

I was wondering how important it is to have dispatch currency before applying for an entry level position. It's been about 3 years since I earned my license and I'm sure that I've completely lost the ability to dispatch. I was thinking that an airline would retrain me and they could help me with my currency. Or would I need to go back to school to get a refresher? I was told by my instructors that I would have to relearn everything once I was hired anyway. I'd appreciate any advice.
