I just retired from the military and have a couple more weeks left in class then I take the Dispatcher exam. Was wondering about pay and who all is hiring Dispatchers. I worked in flight operations in the military I have 16 years experience. I worked in a flight service station and was the only person on duty through the day. I am curious if there are any differences between military Dispatchers and civilian Dispatchers. I was the only one on duty through the day so I had to do the weather briefings, flight plans, flight following, crew hours, aircraft maintenance hours, to mention a few. just wondering where to start as a civilian with experience and if any companies would recognize my experience.

Experience doesn't mean a thing when it comes to working as a dispatcher. You are going to start at the lowest pay ($12.00 - 14.00 per hour), get completely retrained once hired and then maybe see $35k/year after about 5 years. My recommendation to you is to look at corporate gigs, NetJets, Jeppesen, Avantair, etc. The regionals are the only 121 carriers hiring dispatcher fresh out of school. I was in your shoes when I got out of the military and had to take a fairly large paycut as a civilian. The Army is hiring civilian dispatchers in Tampa. federalgovernmentjobs.com or indeed.com.

Thank you for the info. Kinda sucks taking this big of a pay cut to be a civilian dispatcher. I often wonder why it is that civilian companies don't recognize us veterans they way they should. Maybe this is a new area for me and some of my colleagues, who lobby for veterans rights, to pursue. I know a lot of us vets go unrecognized for our military training. But any way, thanks a lot for the info.

| They do - hence the paycut.

Consider Netjets. If you go to Netjets.com there are job postings for Dispatchers and Flight Coordinators at their Columbus, Ohio Flight Center. let me know if you have any questions.

Research the company. The 121 operators out there that are the best options will probably be paying around $15/hour to start. There are some that pay substantially less. You can top out at $50-60K at some of the regionals from what I have gathered.
