I'm in the huge debate if I should go to a career school or to my FBO in Gainesville FL. What kind of jobs if any are you getting after you get your commerical at an FBO?

Probably close to what you'd get with a commercial from a career school. You might be able to buy an RJ course, or something, and get in without your CFI's in the right situation. That situation will cost you, though.

I went to a few part 61 schools, taught for awhile and got a job at Airnet, and I'm hanging out here for awhile because it's a good place to be. FWIW I'd reccommend 61, I had a great experience with it.

| Senior Member | Most places won't hire you with just a commercial, regardless of where you got it (unless you pay for the aforementioned bridge program, but screw that). It's best to just get your CFI tickets and instruct. It seems like there are a lot of places scrounging for CFI's, so finding an instructing gig shouldn't be too difficult. Plus from what I understand, airlines look more favorably on dual given than "I just rented a plane and flew around."

No matter if you do part 61 or a school to get your commercial, your prospects are the same. It all comes down to how aggressive you are in networking to find a job. There are plenty of options with a commercial ticket, the most popular you would be eligible for are: skydiving (probably in a 182, not king air, otter or other turbine) traffic watch (probably in a 150 or 152) banner towing (probably need a tailwheel end) pipeline patrol aircraft ferrying (need to actively search them out) aerial photography grid work (oil company subcontractor or building contractors) fire protection (usually state websites or .gov website has leads) all of these are usually obtained by asking everyone you know what job is where, searching the web etc. But all in all it comes down to taking the initive to find somethign that is not going to fall in your lap. |
