Does anybody have any experience with this company? I'm actually just looking to rent a plane while I'm in SAN in a couple weeks.

I am actually getting my private done at grey eagle! Grey Eagle is a really great aviation school with in my opinion, the lowest rental prices in San Diego county alone. They really stay on top of their maintaince and to my understanding, have not had any bad reports yet. They have a wide selection of aircrafts to choose from. I an very pleased with my training and the aircrafts at Grey Eagle. Check it out! Carlsbad is a great airport to fly out of!

Thanks for the information. It did seem to have better rates than some at Montgomery Field. I actually grew up in San Diego (Mira Mesa) in the 80's and 90's and want to see it from above now.

I am flying here right now. I have about 40 hours in their citabria, and about 5 in their duchess (adding 6 more hours per week). The school is great, the rates are the cheapest in the county, the airplanes are well maintained and the staff is friendly, helpful, and courteous. Nothing I could say negative about the place.

funny you mention that day. That is the first day I am taking 4 days leave from the military to get ahead on training. Basically the 10th-15th I will be flying there 3 times a day, if that feels overwhelming I will be there 2 times per day in the duchess. What are you planning on checking out in?

Sorry for late reply..The duchess is a good plane. It is fairly high time (8000TT) It has had both engines replaced around 800 hrs ago so it runs strong. It has a few little problems that need to be cleared up during the 100hr but nothing abnormal for a flight school plane. The 100hr is in ten hours which will take it down on Monday to get it all taken care of. The rate is $155/hr wet which is cheaper by at least $20/ then anywhere else in the area. The plane has a sandel EHSI and the Garmin 430 but neither of those fly the plane for you so they are just extra goodies to look at. Overall it is an asthetically good looking airplane both in and out and is well maintained. I would reccomend it. Give me about 4 months and I will be your MEI. What requirements are you talking about meeting? They will not let you solo unless you have around 200TT with about another 50 in the duchess if around 20 of that is dual recieved. Other than that you are cleared to get your ME as long as you are US citizen and have a birth cert. Let me know if you have any other questions I would be glad to help you out.

That's what I was woundering. For the price, I pictured a plane owned by Joe Blow who got it because it was just sitting by the sea water for years unused, that was run down with nothing working. And what I ment by the reqs was how many hours do you have to have in their duchesses before you can fly it yourself and be free! Thank again!!!

No problem..this plane definately is not a sea hag. It is not mint off the lot either, but none of them are. The only inop gear in the plane is the autopilot and the elec trim, but they are clearing those both up in the 100hr. They dont have hard mins for the solo, they will work with you and their insurance within reason. If you are around 200 or so TT and had maybe 50 of dual in their twin I am pretty sure they get you up solo

I got my prvt at grey eagle in Sept. In my experience the planes get a hundred hour every 50 just for safety sake... the 152s at least.. dont know if that applies to the duchess. The rates are great and Mel is awesome. Just wish some people would sign up for the ground instrument class this spring to make it worth thier while.

Can anyone give me the low down on the IFR training at the school. I am interested in which airports you fly to, what kind of approaches you shoot and any hints on IFR flying in the general area. Thanks! |

You will do the ILS 24 KCRQ then a VOR to OKB then a Localizer to KCRQ then possibly a VOR to KCRQ with a circle to land. THEN.....you will probably do the ILS to KMYF or the VOR to Brown Field and an ILS to KSEE and a GPS to KOKB or KCRQ THEN....you will go on XC's and do approaches to KONT KSNA KOXR etc etc The SoCal approaches are unlimitted and from KCRQ you can do 7 approaches to 7 different airports in two hours
