After another terrific Montana summer I will soon begin my journey to Florida. I hope I can handle the heat. I spoke with Mary the other day and she said they were maybe gonna let the airport housing go. That kinda bummed me out as I dont like the idea of commuting. Are all you guys in the Pan Am housing going to move? Im at the point of trying to decide on the housing options. When I visited I stayed at the airport. I thought it was fine except for the kitchen. When im stressed out i cook and the hot plate/oven thing looked like a challenge. Being walking distance to the office outweighed that. It seems like they encourage you to stay in Vero when doing the pro course. I just like the idea of flying in the morning, walking home to study and have lunch, then flying in the afternoon. This seems like it would be difficult if home was 15 minutes away. What do you guys and gals(catherine) think? Im looking foreward to meeting everyone there. James

Out of the Aviator housing goes Vero is the best. Having said that if I could do it all over I would not stay in any of the Aviator housing. The rent is high for the area and you have no privacy. People from the school will walk into your bedroom without knocking. They will clean your room when your not home.

Actually some of the Pan Am apartments have regular stoves and ovens in them (smaller than a regular one, but it still works) and I definitely agree with you James, cooking is a great stress reliever and you get something good when you're done cooking and even the mess isn't that bad to clean up, especially if you clean as you go. The rent I think isn't that bad considering it's furnished, has wireless DSL internet, satellite TV, and has pots, pans, silverware, etc. for the amount of time that you stay here. I don't really at this point want to sign a long housing contract for an apartment or anything to get a better rate when I might not be here long enough to fulfill the contract. I'm also not too keen on having to go out and buy or get ahold of all of the things we have here and have to unload them a few months later to someone as I move away. Call it the convenience cost or however you want, just like you find with food in the grocery store that's "ready to eat" and in small servings and costs as much as the food does in large servings if you prepare it first. It is nice to be this close to the school so you can walk, but it also would be really nice to be elsewhere sometimes. The houses in Vero I think all have dishwashers which aren't in Pan Am and make things nice for all those who hate washing dishes. If you really think about it, it would take about 15 minutes to do a walk here and back and if it's 15 minutes one way to drive, it's only another 15 to drive back...so it's 15 minutes to walk versus 30 to drive, which isn't that much difference except in the cost of gas...and if it's raining or about to, I end up driving to the school anyway. Lots of people who've lived in both seem to prefer the Vero housing from what I hear, so aside from the closeness factor, otherwise it seems fine to me and no big deal to live either place. It's only while I'm in school and instructing, it's not for the rest of my life...so I can manage (and I don't mind washing dishes!). I haven't ever had anyone come into my room and do any cleaning nor has anyone ever walked in on me without knocking...into the main room, sure...but never into my bedroom...I don't leave a lot of garbage around or anything like that, but I do sometimes get pretty cluttered in my room and have to straighten things up once a week or something, but that's books and paper and such, not empty food wrappers and leftovers growing legs and walking away.

I'll second be76flyer and say that if you value your privacy (and think Florida landlord/tenant laws should be respected by your landlord. ) then you probably don't want to stay in the *slightly* overpriced housing. They will come into your house and your room when they please and they'll let you know what they think of the condition of the housing (dirty dishes, liquor bottles on display- things like that). I believe the school is working on the assumption that because you don't sign a lease to live in the housing that tenancy laws dont apply. They're going to find out that's not true one day if they piss off the wrong student. It almost came down to that a couple of days ago. Catherine is right though- once you figure in the cost of utilities, cable, furnishing, having to deal with leases, etc the Aviator housing seems pretty reasonably priced. Overall, I don't think you'll regret your decision to come to ari-ben. The flexibility and freedom that is allowed you due to the absolutely chaotic management is really pretty nice (seriously... not being sarcastic- you can hop in a plane at midnight and go flying if you want. Try doing that at other academies). You will rarely have a problem finding a plane to fly anytime you want. Some people complain about maintenance and various other things, but when it comes down to it I usually put myself on the schedule about an hour before I fly and I never have trouble getting a plane. Every place is going to have its "issues", and Ari-Ben certainly does, but overall I'm happy with my stay here so far. |

I noticed on the website the Vero houses have garages. Wherever I go to school, I'll have a motorcycle with me. So I'll need a garage wherever I live. What is in the garages in the Vero houses? Would it be open for me to keep my motorcyle in the garage if I lived in a Vero house?

Thanks for the replies. Anyone have any insight on whether or not the Pan Am housing will still exist as an option?

Pam Am is sold, everyone must be out by the end of the month. Your two options for Aviator housing will be the Pines of Vero or Vero houses.

As far as privacy...the room doors DO have locks with keys if your that worried about it. I lived with cool roomates so that was never an issue. If the doors closed people knock, if its open people sometimes wander in...so what. The entire 6 month time I lived there, a maid only came 3 times...and NEVER went into anyones rooms, she only did the shared areas so I wouldn't worry about that....we kept our own house clean. (*a couple of the houses were always freakin disgusting, but most guys kept decent clean houses) I ended up becoming very good friends with my house mates...I'm glad I stayed in the housing....yeah, its kinda pricey, but it immerses you in studying and social life while your there. I guess if you ended up getting crappy roomates it would suck pretty bad...but "most" of the people going to the aviator are pretty cool. Also note- there are a few drinking/social/party houses and there are some LOCK the door and study, quiet boring houses. I loved living in one of the social houses, but thats just me. Pick your poison.

Looks like next year I'll either be at Falcon or Aviator (wish it could be FSA since I really need a very structured environment knowing myself, but I can't justify the cost of attending FSA). It seems like Falcon and Aviator are close in cost with Aviator being quite a bit less expensive due to the housing situation. But both offering reasonable prices and providing what I see as good overall value ("bang for the buck"). A huge consideration is having a safe garage in the place I live where I get to keep my Harley. Since it's paid for, I don't want to sell it or pay to store it. I like to ride and it's a great way to lower stress or put a smile on your face after the occasional tough day in training when things didn't go as smooth as you hoped for. And I know for at least my first 5 years as a professional pilot I would never have enough money to get the Harley back, so I'll try to hang onto it for the long run. The housing situation at Aviator is a huge plus for me. Tough deicion, but in May I'll be putting down my deposit somewhere for a start date of approximately exactly one year from next Monday. Getting close, yet still so far away...

God I hope it was out. We could not fit anything else in. Notice the two microwaves by the fridge. Love the black and white micro's....

I think I recognise that house! Is the ceiling still covered in soot from a certain person's grease-fire? |

| Don't know, haven't been there since last Dec. I know the house smelled for days. I think the guys were trying to play it safe that night and cook breakfast at home rather than go out to Denny's and take their chances with Vero P.D.
