Can anyone out there tell me what in the world this whole 'part 61', 'part 141', 'part 121' and etc. mean? I am trying to decide which school to do if I get the money and all that jazz. Thanks.

In short part means what rules the school follows in their instruction methods and also applies to the total hours required for certain ratings. Part 61- usually your smal FBO (mom and pop school) but not always. Under part 61 you and your instructor choose to go about learning basically in any order you want, it is up to you. As long as certain things are learned to meet the prerequisites for solo, cross country, checkride etc than it doesnt really matter in what order you do them. I prefer this method as it is much less structured and is totally up to the student and instructor as to how you want to go about lessons. HOUR EXAMPLE- you need 40 total hours for your private license under part 61 part 141- This is much more structured and allows the student to finish his/her rating with fewer hours. The reason is that the school has developed a training program that is structured. Meaning that on lesson one you will learn X, Y, and Z in ground school and than go and fly for X amount of time and learn X,Y, and Z. You have to learn things in a certain order. The schools is authorized to teach under part 141 because their particular program was approved by the FAA and has been proven over a certain time span to be effective. Overall it is much more structured and you do not necessarily have any say in what you learn and the order in which you learn it. Under this rule you can be ellgible for your Private license in 35 hours. Part 121-is the rule in which airlines operate under, i wouldnt really concern yourself with this one. The only benefit for 141 for me is that i am military and i have VA benefits which the government will pay for 60 percent of my flight training after my private license ONLY AT A PART 141 VA APPROVED SCHOOL. So if i want them to pay for my training then i have to go to a 141 approved school. I wouldnt concern yourself with the hours though because the difference between 35 and 40 hours is only 5 hours and the national average is somewhere in the 60 hour range. Although it will probably not take you 60 hours, the difference is too minor to make a difference. Seeing how most jobs require in the 1000 or so TT with 100 or so ME, you are going to need the hours anyway. That is pretty much the basic lowdown of how it works. anyone else have anything I missed?

USMC_SGT, Thanks for taking the time out to answer my question. Are you still active in USMC or are you going to AriBen now?

I am actively sitting in Iraq as we speak! Ari-Ben next April to finish up. i am a little over 150tt now with asel instrument rating, although a citabria has been taking over 80% of my last 50 hours, I just have so much fun dragging the tail i cant stop. I also have my complex and high performance signoffs, but those do not really matter much in the big scheme of things. I am hoping to arrive at Ari with around 225 or so tt and most of my commercial done and the remainder of my writtens. No problem on answering your question I just hope it was as accurate as i think it is!

No problem! Its just a job like anyone else..no thanks needed. Tell your buddy good luck, Africa is a good time. I was also from 3rd but i hailed from Killer Kilo Not sure how long ago your buddy was there but ask him if he knows a SSgt Nelson, he was a drill instructor recently i believe with Mike, he is one of my friends. There is a good chance that if your buddy was there within three years that SSgt was his drill instructor

Yeah I will ask him but I know for a fact that he didn't have him for a drill instructor. His senior was Kiernan, his heavy was Miles and his kill was LaTour.
